Wrist pain

I was previously fairly fit but over the last few years, menopause and stressful jobs have impacted on me and I've become lethargic and fat. Every time (it feels like) I start to exercise I get an injury or pain that means I have to have a break and then I don't start back for weeks or months. It's usually my knees but just in the last year or so I've started to get wrist pain. It makes it difficult to support my body weight or use hand weights (and sometimes affects daily life). It's not a constant pain, if I cut back on the exercise it goes away until the next time. Sometimes it comes even when I haven't been exercising. Because of my age (55) I know it could be the start of arthritis but I'm not prepared to stop exercising and slide into 'old' age.

Anyone got any tips or suggestions? Either wrist supports, strengthening exercise, diet or supplements. TIA.

I have similar recently - I am 44. The GP is sending me for x rays but all I want from him is what you asked - supplements, supports or exercises etc. So I can let you know the outcome!

Hrt! Game changer.

I think you need to find out what the problem is first. Then work out a plan. Nobody can advise you safely without knowing the cause

Go to see a physiotherapist. Then you will know if there is an actual problem or if it is just a question of working up strength and flexibility. The physio can give you targeted exercises.

Google carpel tunnel. My wrists starting hurting and that's what it was. A doctor suggested to me that I may sleep with my hand tucked under so my wrist is bent and so I started wearing wrist splints to bed. It completely cured the problem. Worth looking in to!

Thanks for all the replies.

I'm already on HRT and that hasn't made a difference. A colleague (who's a PT) has given me some strengthening exercises to do so I'll try those first and then seek medical/physio help. Might google carpal tunnel in the meantime though!

Buy a couple of light hand weights and do wrist exercises (youtube)

Hi @chimichangaz thanks for sharing your story. I am peri-menopausal and really feeling my bones these days too!

I'm with @IrkedEssex on this one but with a slight revision: I would recommend you make contact with a rehabilitation therapist (could be a physio, osteo, chiro or graduate sports therapist) but I would highly recommend a therapist who is proficient in return to function / sport as opposed to one who is focused purely around symptom management. With the right therapist you will be able to get the support from an exercise perspective in order to help you continue with the exercise you are so committed too!

Good luck!

Thanks @FollowedMyDreams
Fingers crossed for improvement!
