Does anyone run with arthritis in the knees/ hips?

I gave up running because I presumed it couldn't be done anymore. But then I wondered if someone has invented trainers which offset some of the effects of arthritis and if anyone is still able to run with arthritis. Anyone?

I have mild arthritis in one knee. If I run 2 miles a day I'm fine. But when I ran 10k a few weeks ago I had to have a fortnight off running to recover!

Is there any specific trainers you use newtothenet?

I have a touch of OA in my left hip. When it flares up I have to rest. Normally it's fine though. I do clam shell exercises to help strengthen the muscles which support it. I run 6km 3x a week, on average.
I have insoles in my trainers which help with my overpronation.

I have some bog standard Mizunos but I'd like to get some properly fitted trainers at some point.

6 km sounds quite a lot in one go, but knees are different from knees and hips I suppose.

@ScreamingBeans - it is so lovely to hear that you want to keep running!

Just a thought coming from an injury rehabilitation perspective: Have you considered strengthening the joint? Muscle are our biological scaffolding and help stabilise the joint they wrap around. There are some great rehab therapists (could be Physios or Graduate Sports Therapists) out there who are very experienced at helping client's return to running. Obviously everyone is different in the stage of their arthritis, so I wouldn't want to give you false hope but I would recommend you exploring this as an option

I gave arthritis in the pelvis (AS) and manage to run. I stopped for a few years when first diagnosed but realised I’m better off doing it than doing nothing. I find it’s important for me to really work on strengthening my core so that I have decent form and my half Mara days are over, I keep to shorter distances.
