Can anyone help me with strava?

How does it work/what do I need please? I have an excercise bike and every one keeps asking me if I’m using strava but it doesn’t have anything attached? It has a little box with batteries to do with e distance... what do I need please?

Do you ride a bike outdoors? Do you have a smartphone?

If the little box with batteries broadcasts your data (distance, speed, cadence I’d guess from what you’ve said) via Bluetooth or Ant+ you could use Strava. You could also create an account and log rides manually (you’d need to add in whatever your computer on your exercise bike shows at the end of your session eg 45 mins, 20miles etc).

Strava is an app that captures ride data (indoors or outdoors) which you can keep private or share. Private is good for keeping a personal log, sharing is good for bragging rights!! Indoors is a bit dull. Outdoors is where it’s at on strava. You can use the app to record your ride (or run, or swim, or ski etc) via GPS on your phone. Whilst out you’ll likely come across ‘segments.’ According to your speed over the segment Strava will rank you compared to everyone else who’s ever travelled that segment using it.

Zwift is best for indoor only (in terms of fun) as it’s an online training/ racing/ social platform.

It’s only indoor, can’t get out on bikes for various reasons. How does it have Bluetooth? I guess it doesn’t as it isn’t listed? It says : Hand grip pulse sensor.
Console feedback including: Scan, Time, Distance, Speed, Hand Pulse, Calories. about the little box but that is it?

I have seen people use strava for walking. How is that accurate? I have a Fitbit and an iPhone. The iPhone is crap for step counting, really off as of course it’s generally in my pocket. The Fitbit is much more accurate..

It doesn’t have Bluetooth then - some do eg wattbike.

You’d only be able to manually log your rides on Strava (there’s a simple way of doing this in the app and you can easily copy your stats over from the exercise bike computer). It’d be great for you to log your progress/ fitness gains over time and showing off to your followers how much you’re doing... but otherwise a bit pointless.

I can record walks via my Garmin Forerunner (so GPS) which then uploads to Strava (via garmin connect). If I record directly via the Strava app on my phone it also uses GPS and appears to be as accurate as my forerunner.

Ah ok thanks. I may just log it for myself to see how well I’m doing then.

I'm on Strava and have an Apple Watch, so whatever data my watch is picking up, it transfers it to Strava. Strava is just like a social media account for sports, but is very popular for cyclists. You can add photos, comments, and there's loads of cool stats. As well as this, there are various PBs to achieve, and also segments on popular outdoor routes where you can compare yourself to other Strava users. DH (v fit, loves cycling) loves it.
