Running clothes

Not sure if I'm just stalling before starting C25K.... I have shoes and running leggings, but just wanted to ask what you do about layers on the top half. A sweatshirt with a t-shirt underneath? Also, what do you carry your stuff in (just phone, keys etc.) I think I'd get distracted with a waist pouch bouncing around on my bum, so are there running clothes available with zipped pockets?

Apologies for possibly clueless questions, I've never run before.

There’s definitely hope! I did my first running attempt in the back garden. No, don’t have a very big back garden. Still got out of breath before I’d reached the hedge.

Crocky · 16/10/2020 18:38

Slow down. Seriously 😀 at the beginning it can feel like you could walk faster than you are running but by slowing down you will get to the end of the minute. You’ll still feel like collapsing 😂 but you’ll do it and then you’ll build on it. You can do it.

Crocky · 16/10/2020 18:40

Nearly forgot to say, huge congratulations on getting out there!

lljkk · 16/10/2020 18:58

Practice makes perfect -- or at least, a sense of achievement. :)

I tend to hide keys in the garden & don't carry a phone, either.

AlwaysColdHands · 16/10/2020 19:05

Well done for doing it! I started running for the first time in my life in May. Couldn’t do 90 seconds without a massive struggle. Now I can do 45-50 minutes and it feels like a massive achievement every time.
I hope you grow to love it 😊

BikeRunSki · 16/10/2020 19:40

Phone in leggings pocket, house key on a shoelace round my neck.

HorsesDogsNails · 16/10/2020 21:08

"I can't even run 60 seconds straight is there any hope ?"

Absolutely! I did couch to 5k just over 4 years ago, I was a complete non-runner at that point - I now run 3 or 4 times a week. I can comfortably run 10k without planning it and I've run up to a half marathon! I'm not a natural runner and I'll never be the quickest but you know I don't care, I'm the fittest I've ever been (at 50) and I'm proud that I'm a runner.

It all started with C25k...

I don't work for them I promise! Sign up for the 2 for 24 leggings at fabletics and then cancel. They're the best leggings I've ever had and I'm fat. They have pockets!

Crocky · 16/10/2020 22:21

@AriettyHomily which ones would you recommend?

EmmaStone · 17/10/2020 16:24

Well done! Yes, it gets better, yes slow down.

Clothes-wise, I've built up over the years, so I wear Sweaty Betty leggings (only in the sales), as they don't move, no hoiking up the waistband as you exercise, Sweaty Betty stamina sports bras as they work for my small boobs. Tops are a variety of vests, which I then layer with a long sleeved running top when it gets a bit cooler. I also sometimes wear a sweatshirt.

An ear warmer band is a must for me, otherwise my ears get really, REALLY painful in the cold weather, and I have a pair of running gloves for proper cold days (although I don't really like wearing them). A pretend flip belt from Amazon to keep my phone, keys, tissues and gloves when they've annoyed me enough.

I've actually started investing in some proper running socks as well, my feet are a bit of a nightmare with toenails with a tendency to ingrow and a burgeoning bunion on one foot, so the extra cushioning of a running sock helps take away a smidgeon of the discomfort. My favourites are Stance. And last, but the most important thing of all, trainers. I've had gait analysis, physio advice on trainers due to knee issues, and they've all ended up pointing to a shoe for over-probation with a good level of cushioning. For me that's Asics Gel Kayano, which aren't cheap, but I buy previous seasons' shoes in the outlet or online.

I've got the motion 365s

Crocky · 17/10/2020 19:55

@AriettyHomily, thank you.

DrGachet · 20/10/2020 16:18

I had another go (wasn't sure if I was going to slink off into obscurity) and it was much better, managed the full minutes! Thank you for the advice to slow down, that's what made it more manageable. And regulating my breathing.

Did anyone else throw up when they started running? BlushShockEnvy

AriettyHomily the leggings - how did you cancel your sub? The website says to phone, so is that the only way to cancel?

Thanks again all of you for the encouragement SmileSmile

Did anyone else throw up when they started running?

Mmm. Very nearly. You need to slow down even more - and not eat for the hour or so beforehand.

It honestly gets better!

Crocky · 20/10/2020 20:48

Felt like throwing up a few times.

EmmaStone · 20/10/2020 22:06

Well done for getting out again! I usually run before a meal rather than after (so in the morning before breakfast, or late afternoon before dinner). Couldn't do any proper exercise after eating, bleurgh!

DrGachet · 21/10/2020 14:11

I hadn't even eaten beforehand! My poor body's probably wondering wtf I'm doing to it. Good for it in the long term though, (at least that's what I keep telling myself).

DrGachet · 22/10/2020 13:52

3rd run today, and no vomming, yay! I'm going to repeat week one again though, as I can only just make it to the end of a minute.

OP posts:
Crocky · 22/10/2020 15:01

Brilliant. Make sure you are drinking enough during the day and don’t be too scared to move on in the weeks. I’m not saying that you shouldn’t repeat runs if you wish but the plan does work so don’t stick on a week for too long 😄

DrGachet · 22/10/2020 16:25

Thanks Crocky, I don't mind repeating this week, only a few years ago I couldn't even walk up the stairs without hauling myself up along the bannister Shock (I was in a v. bad way through being an alcoholic).

Phone in an arm strap (cos I use it for music)

Door key in back zip pocket of leggings.

Top I get hot quick so just wear a running vest. In the depths of winter I have an under armour long sleeve base layer I wear under a t-shirt

Crocky · 22/10/2020 18:05

Then you are doing absolutely brilliantly.
goisey · 23/10/2020 14:00

@DrGachet

Thank you all, this is really helpful and have just ordered a flip belt, looks much more secure than a bum bag.

Was just about to leave, but my phone needed charging, (definitely not procrastinating Grin). Is it sheer stupidity to take the dog? Just this once so I feel less of a twat? I'm planning to do it in a playing field which is fenced in, so he can run loose while I'm "running".

I always take my dog, otherwise it's another job to do. I just extend the walk her after I've finished the app. I leave my door keys at home, under a plant pot. I carry poo bags and my phone and treats for the dog - she's off lead and we are always working on recall. I only run in the autumn-spring in the evenings after work and I feel the cold, so I wear a neck buff & fingerless gloves, often a hat! These are all easily removable if I get too hot, or I shove them in a hedge (I run in the fields near my house) and collect them on the way home.
