Any trainer gurus? I know nothing- please help!

Just finished couch to 5K today and promised myself new trainers. Been online and I just have no idea where to start.
I am 5 foot 6, about a stone and a half overweight and a very slow runner. I’m hoping to carry on doing half hour runs alternate days and maybe if I’m feeling brave a parkrun when they come back. I don’t have any particular problems with joints and my feet are big (8) but standard issue. The trainers I have are about 5 or 6 years old I think and are really comfortable but getting threadbare ( attached photo). Ideally I’d just get another pair but they don’t seem to make them any more!

You sound exactly the same as me except I'm only on week 4 (wish me luck!!). If you don't mind I may watch your thread to see what advice you get!! Well done on completing couch to 5k by the way!! How does it feel?!

I’m mostly surprised! The weeks 4-6 were the big change really. Just need to work out a way to keep plodding on- hence new trainers .

Those are Nike, on the inside tab they should say what they are (Pegasus? Zoom?). There will be a newer version of the same shoe.

However, I'd really recommend getting to a proper running shop (eg Runners Need or somewhere independent), have them check your gait and suggest appropriate trainers. I over-pronate (inside turns inwards), so I've got trainers with a lot of support on the inside arch to keep my feet stable. I tried a few pairs before finding ones that worked for me, and I've been buying them ever since. I usually buy in outlet stores or sales of previous years' versions to keep the costs down.

Go to runners world or somewhere they video you and analyse your gait.

You don't have to buy from them but they'll tell you what you need then you can come home and buy last seasons colours for half the price.

Thanks for replies- unfortunately I live very rurally and our nearest specialist shop would be an hour and a half drive. I asked a woman at work who properly runs- and she suggested I look for online questionnaires to try and narrow down what I need. I’ll give that a try. I did try looking up the newer version of my trainers but they had a completely different sole shape and I don’t know of that would be ok. Could of course be even better but no way to tell , hence my dithering.

Hey! Congrats on finishing couch to 5k! As you’ve had nikes in the past, The Nike infinity react is a great all round running shoe, I sized up half a size in them as the fly knit can be quite tight - it’s free returns on nike website so worth ordering a couple of pairs if you’re not sure on size. They have good support and cushioning, you can feel the ‘react’ the whole time on the run. Great for easy runs to racing, would really recommend! Worth waiting for Nike to do 20 off offers if not super urgent. I’d say next one may be end of Oct, and if not will defo be thanks giving.

Thanks for the advice- I actually ended up doing the trainer finder thing on brookes website, and it takes you through a couple of gait exercises. So I’ve ordered a cushioned normal gait trainer and we will see. If it’s horrid I’ll send it back and try the nike! If you could order the motivation to go out and run in the dark and rain I’d be all set..

Ooh exciting! Hopefully they work out Smile once you have some shiny new trainers you’ll be straight out the door Grin
