Cold wind earache while jogging - is it just me, and is there a solution?

I get an earache whenever a cold wind is blowing around my head so usually I wear a hat or hood when this happens.

Having taken up running this summer, I have experienced this while running twice now - once when out running one a cliff top on holiday in the summer, and today while running my usual route in the local park. I can't wear a hood or hat while running because I'd get too hot - is there some other magic solution? It is most unpleasant and I had to stop running today because of it.

Headband?

SirVixofVixHall · 25/09/2020 19:45

You can get earplugs for surfing that allow you to hear but stop the wind, surfers can problems if they are constantly exposed to cold winds with no protection. I wear them and they are fine, I’ll go and look for the ones I have and then link.

I’d also say headband.

Headband or folded over Buff

surfears.com/kayaking/
Here they are, but there are cheaper ones around if you google. I like the fact I can still hear with them.
Otherwise, headphones ?

I second a running headband with ear warmers, like this one: Amazon link

Thanks for replying!
I worry about a headband that it would be too hot and I'd find it distracting (I'm not a very good runner and easily distracted by physical things which negatively impacts my ability to keep going...)
The ear plugs sound very promising - a magical solution perhaps!

I have this problem. I always wear a headband like a buff or hygge, unless it's exceptionally hot, to cover my ears. If you always do this you will get used to it. I'd always rather overheat slightly than face ear ache!

pinkbalconyrailing · 25/09/2020 19:50

look up 'earbags'
I wear them over my earplugs especially in windy weather.

fitzbilly · 25/09/2020 19:50

I have the earplugs for surfing. I start then for surfing bit they would not work for running, I don't I need to keep my whole ear warm to stop the pain.

If you always wear a headband you'll soon get used to it and it won't be a distraction.

BewareTheBeardedDragon · 25/09/2020 19:51

Ok, thank you all so much! The price has swung it and I will try a headband first - hope I will adjust. I need to develop my willpower to overcome the distractions!

My mum always put cotton wool in her ears when we went for a walk for this reason. As a kid I just thought she was weird and embarrassing but now I get it!

Ah, age brings so much understanding of ones parents Grin

neck buff that can double as head band and wrap around your wrist if you overheat.

FinallyHere · 26/09/2020 13:15

I get too hot for a headband so often put a twist of tissue in my ear if I notice a cold wind being troublesome. Cotton wool would probably work too but tissues tend to be what I have to hand.

EmmaStone · 26/09/2020 14:17

Oh the ear pain, it makes me want to cry. I've got an ear buff, which is lovely and fleecy, so it's lovely to wear, but most importantly, does the job. Because the top of your head is exposed, I guess the majority of the heat is still escaping?
