As the last thread has been going so well, with graduates aplenty, here's a new thread for encouragement. Everyone is welcome!

Thank you . My shoes are sadly not old or remotely knackered, just far too tight! Sad

Cavagirl · 08/12/2020 17:03

@DobbyTheHouseElk I use Google music which is now called You Tube music. DP had a multi subscription, for a single account i think it's about £9 a month or something? I'm definitely not using it to its full extent although it's quite clever at suggesting playlists for me - I'm either 00s garage classics or 90s dance anthems for running! Lol.
@Misandrylovescompany great work! Grin

User258544 · 08/12/2020 17:39

Good luck to all the runners today, its ffffreezing. My running gear is a pair of Brooks GTI (bought on ebay, recommend going up half a size), whatever socks and leggings I can find, I did buy a New Balance running jacket from the Cumbria outlet, it is a ludicrous bright yellow but good for Winter, any long sleeve top underneath.

Deepintheforest · 08/12/2020 18:54

Didn't manage 30 minutes today as had to work late so for some crazy reason I decided to do 3x1km as fast as I could with 30 sec, 1 min, 2 mins of walking in between. Averaged at 5.42 per km over the three and felt like I might vomit by the end. How on earth do people maintain that place over a whole 5k Blush

superoz · 08/12/2020 21:39

@minipie thanks, yes I think I need to get some long sleeve tops and layer up.

I’ve recently used some of the music mixes on BBC Sounds which you can download to phone have listened to Workout Anthems, and Dance Anthems so far.

I asked dh to buy me a pair of Asics Cumulus trainers for Christmas, to replace the ones I’ve had for 15 years!

Jibberoo · 08/12/2020 23:09

Hi all hope you've enjoyed your runs today. Went out for a lunch time run which I never get time to do and it was so much nicer to run in daylight! Sadly I'm struggling really badly with w7. Can seem to run at all and had to walk for around 30secs or so every 5mins. My husband was trying to cheer me up saying that exercising in the cold is harder on your lungs but I wonder if I've hit some sort of wall. My knee is knackered so I'm going to give tomorrow a rest even though I feel I need to go out and try again.
At least my dog loved the day time run as it was in the park and he was off lead.
It was absolutely freezing though - I've bought some warm running leggings and long sleeve top from decathlon- not too expensive and perfect. I team this with a thermal long sleeve top and bright yellow running top. Gloves too today. When it's this cold I find that this is perfect but when it's around 10 I need to loose the thermal and switch to normal leggings.

Also for those thinking of how to carry phone I have a small bum bag that just fits my phone, keys and dog poo bags. It's perfect as not too big but snug around my tummy (tummy padding helps). I bought it years ago on Amazon but I'm sure there's loads around. It was a cheap old thing.

Good luck to those braving the run tomorrow!

Namechange1245 · 09/12/2020 15:38

I hope nobody minds if I join. I did my first ‘run’ today. I could not believe how hard it was and so could do with some support! I realised that I am 100 times more unfit than I thought and I need to face up to that and do something about it. Hopefully it will get easier.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 09/12/2020 15:50

NameChange

It is hard, don’t be hard on yourself.

I missed my run today because I worked outside this morning and still haven’t warmed up. Not sure I’m up to a run.

It will get easier I’m sure. 60 seconds seems a long time at the moment.

NurseP · 09/12/2020 16:31

Name change, I know it will be the same for me. Well done for starting ! I haven't even got my new shoes yet!!

Cavagirl · 09/12/2020 16:33

Welcome NameChange !
Starting is half the battle! This is a really friendly group to help you along Grin Remember you can repeat weeks, so don't do what I do read ahead and worry you won't be able to do the harder runs, you can go slower if you need it and soon you'll be finding 60s a breeze.x

Murmurur · 09/12/2020 17:18

@Namechange1245 welcome. Just take it a bit at a time - anything is better than nothing. I started running laps round my small garden (which I would not recommend).

Namechange1245 · 09/12/2020 17:41

Thank you all. Great to know that I am not alone! Starting to look forward to the next run!

schoolcook · 09/12/2020 18:04

@Namechange1245 the one thing I will say is it definitely gets easier and is so worth it.
I now run 5K 3/4 times a week and I think I'm living on runners high Grin

I'm 45 and never run before the end of this August - didn't think I could.

Namechange1245 · 09/12/2020 18:16

@schoolcook that is brilliant. Well done! That is what I hope I will be doing. It was so hard but I feel better today mentally than I have felt for ages so I really think it has done me good. Who knew!

schoolcook · 09/12/2020 18:19

I don't struggle with my mental health at all but still feel it's been boosted by running Grin

AlrightTreacle · 09/12/2020 18:27

@Namechange1245

I've done C25K on and off for a few years (never actually finished it though Blush). The very first time I week 1, run 1, I felt like I was having a heart attack, threw up outside my local cathedral, got heckled by some teenagers and had to ring my friend to come and pick me up Blush. It definitely does get easier though!

Also hi all, I'm new to this thread and am restarting C25K yet again, determined to actually finish it this time. I do quite like running, but my knee does not, which is why I've never finished it before. I always get too enthusiastic and do too much too quick and set my knee off. Hoping to take it slow and steady this time, and finally complete it! Just off to do week 2 run 1 now.

minipie · 09/12/2020 19:18

I was supposed to run today and didn’t Blush

In fairness I did do two classes at the gym so was a bit knackered. No such excuse tomorrow so I must get w5r2 done then... but that leaves me with the dreaded w5r3 at the weekend...

Jibberoo · 09/12/2020 21:31

Hi all and welcome @Namechange1245 and @NurseP

Well I went out again today instead of resting and I had a better 25min run - still had to take a break half way through for around 2mins to catch my breath but it was definitely better than yesterday. Only problem is that my already sore and tight hamstring is even worse. No amount of stretching helping - I need a sports massage but would probably scream in pain. Wish I enjoyed baths so I could soak for a while but I really hate the whole faff of making one and then sitting there bored 😂

I've decided to stick with week 7 till January so that I really get the whole 25mins running nailed without stressing. Then look to up the time in jan. I think I've moved too quickly through the weeks and it's catching up with me. Either way if I'm to commit to being a runner then I need to realise I'm in it for the long haul so no point in rushing!

Hope everyone is enjoying their runs this week.

Misandrylovescompany · 09/12/2020 21:35

@AlrightTreacle that is a classic starting-C25K story! I hope your journey now will involve less puking and fewer laughing teenagers.

I was meant to go out today for another pop at w5r3 but work was unexpectedly busy so I didn’t. Tomorrow will also be busy but I’m going to try and get out before it all starts.

mysocalledlife · 09/12/2020 22:51

I've finished week 9 but I have to say I'm finding the 30 minute runs an absolute killer. And strangely harder than 28 mins Confused.

I'm fine until 20 minutes in and I then just seem to hit a wall. I'm tired...something is hurting...everything is tell me to stop and walk...and yet I know I still have 10 minutes left. Urgh. I force myself to push through, but it's horrible.

And then I seem to get my second wind at 25 minutes and I make it to the end!

I have to say I think weeks 8 and 9 are the absolutely hardest weeks for me so far.

It's weird because you'd think if you made it to 25 mins running, an extra 5 mins would be manageable, but somehow NO. Psychologically if I'm finding it tough, but know I only have 5 mins left I know I can make it, but 10 mins left seems so long and I have a mini crisis!

DobbyTheHouseElk · 10/12/2020 07:08

25 mins running is really good. I can’t see me getting there at this stage!

Deepintheforest · 10/12/2020 07:17

@mysocalledlife I have a similar issue I find the first 5 minutes of each run awful then I get into my stride and enjoy the next 15 minutes. By 20 I'm starting to get tired and 10 more minutes feels like forever and I have to force myself to keep going then once I get to 25ish i start to get excited by the fact I've nearly done it and get a second wind. Its definitely a mental thing for me because I was similar when the runs where only 20 mins. I try to get myself into a good day dream so I'm focusing less on each minute

Namechange1245 · 10/12/2020 08:20

Such inspiring stories. It is encouraging to hear that it is worth persevering. Terrified and excited in equal measure!

DobbyTheHouseElk · 10/12/2020 10:07

W2 R1 done this morning.

I don’t know if it was the sunshine or the music but it was fine!!

My lungs aren’t finding it hard yet....I do walk and cycle loads so maybe that’s why. My legs feel like I’m dragging lead weights around.

90 secs sounded hard but I found it easier than 60 secs. Got a bit more into my stride. I was repeating “I love running” in my head as Jo told me to! I think it’s mental with me.

I am hideously overweight, but I’m fairly active. Saw a few other runners out. Had to tell myself no one was looking at me.

Did it in perfect timing for the route, started the last 5 min walk at the bottom of a hill and finished the route at my front door perfectly in time with Jo.

Might have to go further now as I’m taking a shorter time to complete it.

I hope I feel this motivated next time.

minipie · 10/12/2020 14:42

So impressed with those of you on 25, 28, 30 minutes!

I did w5r2 today - two lots of 8 minutes. It was ok, I struggle around 4 minutes and then it gets better.

So w5r3 is the sudden jump to 20 minutes right?? 😱 Can anyone shed any light on why they do this to us rather than a more gradual ramp up? I don’t want to go off programme but the idea of 20 minutes is really scaring me.
