As the last thread has been going so well, with graduates aplenty, here's a new thread for encouragement. Everyone is welcome!

DS and I (he wanted to come out again 😁) were supposed to go out yesterday evening but it was pouring rain and blowing a gale so we postponed.
I've got Wk 9 with Run Club tomorrow evening, think they'll push us to do the 5k in 30 😬 might have some sweets before I go for a sugar rush, maybe an espresso too!

schoolcook · 02/11/2020 22:21

I'm still plodding -aiming to run every other day.

I can't eat before I exercise but struggle without food so I have two medjool dates and that's just enough to see me through without making me feel sick.

JustCallMeGriffin · 03/11/2020 10:44

It's great to see everyone getting on so well, and welcome to all the new faces.

I'm a few weeks past graduation and 5k is still eluding me...in the weather we've had lately just getting out at 6am for 30 minutes is enough. The driving rain and howling wind really aren't motivators to keep going for longer!

But tomorrow morning looks perfect and I don't have the pressure to return home for a shower before everyone wakes because of lockdown so going to give it a good go. Hoping for a sub 40 minute 5k, if I do my reward is not running up the hill to get home
(which would make my route 5.2k), I'll just walk it Grin

foresttheout · 03/11/2020 12:27

Hello all can I join? Currently on week 5. I actually completed the program last year and ran 5km a couple of times a week for a while but an injury, terrible weather and the lockdowns mean I didn't run at all for 8 months.

KihoBebiluPute · 03/11/2020 13:09

Hello and welcome @foresttheout

I am just back from wk4 r1 and surprised myself at managing to persevere through it. It really helped doing it at lunchtime rather than first thing as it really was bitingly cold this morning but it was nice weather for it just now.

LakeFlyPie · 03/11/2020 23:01

Am so impressed by those of you who braved the howling gales and rain.

I went to Run Club this evening and was alarmed that my slow running buddy wasn't there so had to do the W9 run with the Main Pack 😮
They were lovely and we managed 5.95k in 42 mins which I was well chuffed with.
Just need to keep it up now!

schoolcook · 04/11/2020 07:41

How do you all manage the cold weather ? I'm currently running at 5:45 am and obviously it's starting to get colder. I wear 3/4 length leggings and a vest and by the time I get home I'm boiling. So I'm reluctant to wear more but the first half is flipping cold !

JustCallMeGriffin · 04/11/2020 11:26

@schoolcook I'm starting to struggle to be honest.

This morning was absolutely perfect as autumnal mornings go (I'm out at 6am) but I was sodding freezing for the first 15 minutes. Wearing more layers would definitely make me overheat before I'm done so I feel stuck.

Because I'm much larger than I should be, taking a light tracksuit top/hoody isn't an option because I'm too fat to comfortably tie it around my waist to finish so I'd have to hold it...that's just adding to the excuses not to run then. I don't even run in a jacket when it's raining, I'm the crazy overweight woman running at 6am in pouring down rain in just a Tshirt, leggings and trainers!

randomsabreuse · 04/11/2020 12:25

On a linear or laps walk stash the unwanted layer once you've warmed up.

I quite like a buff as an extra layer as it keeps you warmer but you can wrap around a wrist instead once you're warm.

Can you carry a light jacket like a sash instead of around your waist? Or take a mini rucksack. I hate carrying stuff on me, worst bit is DD's cast offs as she's 5, often ends up tied through my running belt in desperation!

JustCallMeGriffin · 04/11/2020 13:29

Thanks for the tips randomsabreuse it's the whole carrying thing that would bother me and make me less likely to run which is why I'm freezing my poor arms off in a Tshirt (only recently moved to Tshirt from vest...that's how bad my overheating is).

My sports bra already gouges tracks in my shoulders so really can't add a rucksack to that I'm the only person I know that has bleeding shoulders as a regular running injury...no matter the sports bra types I've tried and my chest is far bigger than my waist so wearing as a sash isn't possible either.

I think I need to chalk these up to the problems of being overweight and trying to exercise along with actual exercise and reflective clothing being prohibitively expensive or incredibly fitted no one needs to see me in lycra-esque clothes!

It's only been 3 months of doing this thanks to C25k so hopefully by next winter I won't be as chunky or liable to overheating so I can strike some sort of reasonable balance, but for now because I want to be healthier I'll have to endure cold arms. Really appreciate the suggestions though Smile

schoolcook · 04/11/2020 13:45

I don't wear a coat at the best of times I think I'm probably going to have to suck it up and run faster to get warm Grin

randomsabreuse · 04/11/2020 14:20

My sports bras like to beat me up too, although it's usually been a bent hook digging into my back! I really struggled with running in a vest in summer, my jiggly arms chafed on the seams as I ran. Was very frustrating - nearly as bad as the time my running tights let go in the inseam and I shredded my inner thigh walking back from the run!

I'm happy to be finally running pain free after appendix out in July. Still going to use the C2 5k intervals as I want that sub 30 5k. Missed a rest beep so did 10 minutes at running speed - best 1k split since July which is nice!

MutteringDarkly · 04/11/2020 16:59

Finished the programme today - misjudged the depth of a ten metre long icy puddle so went through it instead of round - and the last half of the run was done in trainers squidging with icy water Shock but a fantastic feeling to get to thirty minutes.

Next will be to work up to 5k.

Talksunderwater · 04/11/2020 19:33

Well done @MutteringDarkly Star
I really struggled with the cold this morning (W8R2) and although I wore a light hoodie, it took 1km of running after the warmup walk before my fingers were warm. I’m definitely going to wear gloves next time.

schoolcook · 04/11/2020 19:44

Nice one @MutteringDarkly

I went to Asda to buy gloves today and it appears only men want fingerless gloves Hmm

JustCallMeGriffin · 05/11/2020 09:18

Well done @MutteringDarkly although icey cold trainers doesn't sound pleasant! Hope your home was nice and warm for your return.

Cathpot · 05/11/2020 11:09

Very well done mutteringdarkly!

I actual had an enjoyable run this morning, and I never thought that would happen. I managed bastard hill without stopping and then made it all the way back to the car without walking which is just over 5km running for the first time. I know that next time out might be horrible but I’m happy today. Beautiful sunshine and flat sea. It was very cold at the start. It’s interesting the switch post C25K from being obsessed with minutes left, to starting to think more about distance.
justcallmegriffin could you have some sort of bum bag and tuck a light coat into it? Or if that’s not comfortable a packamac type coat you could shove into a pocket? I’ve got running leggings with pockets. Even a really light wind proof layer would probably help. Also warm wrists and necks make a difference. You are doing an amazing thing- no problems only solutions...( a phrase I stole from our builder at times of crisis!)

schoolcook · 05/11/2020 15:43

@Cathpot I'm just transitioning from "minutes left" mindset to distance thinking and it feels good.

I managed 5K in just under 32 minutes this morning so very happy with that.

I wore sweatbands to keep my wrists warm but the rest of me was covered in cold rash. I looked sunburned Grin

Cathpot · 05/11/2020 17:03

schoolcook that’s really good! It took me at least 45mins yesterday.

KihoBebiluPute · 05/11/2020 17:12

@schoolcook same conundrum here and yes I am mostly just putting up with a cold first half. I did experiment with a figure-of-eight route which looped around back to my house allowing me to drop off my hoodie in the front garden at the half way point, but it was a less nice route so I didn't repeat it and I am leaving the hoodie at home because it is too bulky to deal with once it gets too hot to run in. Today I wore gloves and a hat, both lightweight enough to shove into the pockets of my running leggings once I get hot, and that worked quite well at keeping the worst of the chills away without lumbering me with something as big as a hoodie.

schoolcook · 05/11/2020 17:17

I think gloves and full length leggings will probably do me unless it gets much colder.

I've been reading about running somewhere else today and they were saying your body gets used to it and it becomes your normal. Hence not really any good for weight loss / maintenance.

I've stuck my fingers in my ears and am just celebrating the fact that I'm running Grin

Happyface120 · 05/11/2020 21:02

I need to share with people who will get it- I RAN 5K!! Slowly, but I did it Grin

schoolcook · 05/11/2020 21:31

@Happyface120 yay well done Smile

JustCallMeGriffin · 05/11/2020 23:27

@Happyface120 well done! That's brilliant. You've just moved to my inspirational club.

I failed yesterday to do 5k so giving it another good go tomorrow. I will sodding well cover 5k without stopping before this poor excuse for a year is done!

@schoolcook forget about what a random website says. You're giving your heart and lungs a good workout. No matter what the scales say that makes you healthier. My GP is delighted that I'm exercising regularly even though I've only lost 4lb since July (depressingly I also stick with 1200 calories a day but still have 5 stone to lose!)

@Cathpot I might start looking for XXL bumbags. It would have to be loose enough that I wouldn't feel it snug on my waist but that might be an option.

My husband really will think I've lost the plot then Grin

schoolcook · 06/11/2020 06:04

@JustCallMeGriffin thanks I actually needed to hear that.

12 weeks ago I couldn't run and now I'm doing 5K.

I'm still in shock Grin
