Strava vs NRC

Does anyone use these for running and know which is more accurate? Strava puta me at a whole minute faster pace than Nike, so I obviously want that to be more accurate!

I’ve never used NRC but Strava will take out pauses so if you wait at a gate for along time for example, it will cut out the dead time. You can look at moving time vs. Activity time to see if they are different. That might be why the difference? Are both apps giving you the same distance?

screamer1 · 18/08/2020 12:51

Thanks @RowboatsinDisguise they give slightly different distances too. Starva is longer.

A minute is such a huge distance. Normally on Nike it pauses workout if you stop at traffic lights etc.

Same! I use Strava and NRC, they both vary wildly .... I'd always prefer to believe the Strava but wld imagine NRC is more accurate...
To further complicate matters, I've just purchased a Garmin watch 😂😂😂 (not run with it yet though 😳)

Sorry that absolutely no help! Just glad the Strava/NRC isn't just me 🙄🙄

Chocolateteabag · 21/08/2020 12:43

Here you go - exact same run, tracked on my Garmin and in Strava via phone (as I hadn't yet worked out how to sync Garmin to Strava

screamer1 · 21/08/2020 13:23

@Chocolateteabag which was more accurate do you think?

I really hope strava is more accurate. More pro runners that I know use it. I can't believe the pace disceepancy. It makes such a massive difference!

Strava Is more accurate but I would get a GPS watch like garmin

Kez0777 · 21/08/2020 13:44

I use both Strava and NRC on my Apple Watch. Strava always does my runs shorter by a small bit but means I have to keep going to make sure I tick over my miles and don't end up finishing on something like 3.9 miles😁
Today my NRC tracked me as running 4.14 miles, 36.59 minutes, 8'56" pace.
Strava tracked it as 4.11 miles, 36.04 minutes, 8'46" pace.
So not too much of a difference I definitely prepare my strava pace though 🤣

Kez0777 · 21/08/2020 13:45

I've just looked at calories though and strata has me burning 100 more calories which I don't believe

fellrunner85 · 21/08/2020 15:12

Totally depends what you're using to measure both.
Are you saying you use your Nike watch to measure your run but the info is different once it uploads to Strava? Or are you measuring twice - once on your phone with Strava and once on your watch with Nike?

Strava as a system is the most accurate you're going to get; but only if you're feeding info to it from a reliable source (ie Garmin or Suunto watch). If you're relying on phone GPS, then not so much - but that isn't a problem with Strava, it's a problem with your phone IYSWIM.

screamer1 · 21/08/2020 15:22

@fellrunner85 I run both on my phone for the same run.

Sounds like you've got autopause on Strava, perhaps? Are the distances the same but Strava time shorter? That would make the pace shorter.
If you post the stats, I bet we can figure it out.

Kez0777 · 21/08/2020 15:28

I use both through my watch and both have auto pause and it's still different

fellrunner85 · 21/08/2020 15:53

They will autopause differently though. In Strava, for example, you can choose how long you've "stopped" before the pause kicks in.
I have mine set so I have to stop for a minute or so before it pauses, so it doesn't stop for traffic lights etc, but will stop if I'm genuinely stopped.
If one app is pausing for traffic lights, road crossings, a quick lace retie or whatever, and the other isn't, that could easily add up to a min per mile over a very short run.

@screamer1

So these are the same run. I didn't stop for traffic lights on either.
That's a big difference in your pace 🤔 mines never by that much. It's funny how yours is the different way around too, so longer on strava. I've heard it doesn't work that well running two on your phone or one on a phone and one on a watch which is why I do both apps on my watch
screamer1 · 21/08/2020 16:23

Just posting these without locations!

I've done a few half marathons at 1hr50, but haven't run for a while. I'm really hoping strava is most accurate as it means I'm less off my old pace.

But it sounds like I need to get a watch.

Have they both brought up maps, and if so does one look more accurate than the other (ie no mad zig zags where the GPS went off)?
Your pace is just calculated by distance and time, so it's that massive disparity between the 2.8 and the 3.08 that's done it.

Either one didn't kick in until late in your run or one over-measured, maybe?

Chocolateteabag · 22/08/2020 08:09

Sorry - realised the pics I posted were a bit too identifying of where I live - have edited them here

I think Garmin is more accurate than Strava. Strava has regularly posted a run as being shorter than Garmin
Previous to this watch, I used DH's old Garmin alongside Strava to track a 1k run - Garmin tracked me as running 1.1k along the route I'd measured (using a "track your route" site on the laptop), Strava said I'd only run 0.97k once it had uploaded.
As I was in a VR relay team I had to submit a picture of the Garmin watch face to make sure my effort could be included

I think the discrepancy is due to a more accurate GPS on a Garmin than on your phone. And between apps, it may be because the apps take longer to get the GPS on the phone started, so an extra 20-30 seconds at the start of the run can mean many meters difference.

My Garmin watch gets a GPS fix within 5 secs, my iPhone slightly longer.

Definitely.

SorrelBlackbeak · 22/08/2020 08:38

I tend to run off road and NRC is hugely out, it seems unable to track fields. Strava and Runkeeper both manage perfectly well. I tried it once with all three running on my phone and strava and runkeeper both came out at 8km (as also measured on google maps) NRC has 5km... I tend to Ignore NRC's distancing....
