Pilates and/or Yoga? Interested in the pros and cons of each

Just that really, please. Are they similar or very different? What does each aim to achieve? Is one 'better'?

I'd like to do one, or both TBH, with a general aim of toning up and feeling less 'stiff' as I age. Would be very interested to hear from people who favour one over the other to help me choose which might suit me best.

Thanks 😊

I've done both. Like the flowing stretching nature of yoga, but it really aggravated my back. The deep forward bends did me no good at all. For that reason I don't do it any more and find the way Pilates strengthens your core suits my body much better.

As @Duchessofealing said. I really enjoy yoga, practised for a long time and am naturally quite good at it in terms of being able to do difficult postures easily, it’s good for mind, body and soul...but feel pilates done very correctly with a very good instructor is more beneficial for your strength and tone. Have you seen the (very old) Joseph Pilates? There’s inspiration for you

@tiredvommachine

I've got my first yoga and Pilates class on Wednesday at my new gym and I'm bricking it. I hurt my knee last week so a bit dubious about some of the positions I might need to do Confused
Tell the instructors about any injuries! If they're any good they will make sure you don't do anything to aggravate it. There's surely never any position you 'must' do if it's going to harm you.

Pilates for me. Better for strengthening, recovering and rehabbing injuries. Also no mumbo-jumbo Wink

Yoga is about your mind, body, spirit joining in union to assist you in your path to enlightenment

Pilates was created as a form of exercise by an ex gymnast to assist injured patients.

Both can be brilliant for the mind and body depending on what you want to work on and by seeing which one makes you feel good during and after.

Thank you @ErrolTheDragon, I will tell them and hopefully the knee strap will also be an indication I need to be careful Grin

My yoga class was amazing, really enjoyed it! Am beyond exhausted after a disturbed night with DS so hoping it's not some messed up tired endorphin mash up but looking forward to my next class on Friday. Maybe I've found the exercise that I'll finally enjoy? Grin

Any recommendations for online Pilates classes suitable for a beginner?
I did lots of yoga years ago but would like to give Pilates a try.

I love pilates but you need to have a good instructor. I might add, your arse will become awesome with pilates, it will point up 🍑

I love Pilates. I am a very practical person and interested in the body, and not about the feels or spirituality at all. So yoga has never appealed.

Pilates (with a great teacher) really sorted out my diastasis rectii and my over tight hip flexors/under developed hamstrings. It made a big difference to my posture. I really need to go back to it!

Pipandmum · 30/08/2020 00:24

I've done both. I've fine pilates fur a few years - really great for core strength and backs, and also made me more flexible, so I thought I'd do ok with yoga. I found it much more challenging than expected. It works different muscles in a different way.
So, I'd say do both! Also strength training and some aerobics.
