Best way to fix my dreadful core

My core is a mess. My real problem is a disproportionately bulging tummy. Increasingly so. After years of avoiding exercise and quietly sneering at “gym bunnies” (sorry, guys) I recognise that I probably need to join them. But how?

I’m 35, had a baby a year ago and have looked “padded” around the tummy area ever since. Blush

I’m naturally slim. Currently just at the upper end of a “healthy” BMI, which really is a bit too much for my 5’4 frame and I do look on the cuddly side post-lockdown, but I know I can tackle that. My primary concern is the disproportionately bulging tummy. I feel it’s getting worse with age and it’s never been so bad. I have poor muscle tone in general and also hyper-mobility, so I’ve always been floppy and slouchy by default. I also have PCOS so some of the tummy issue is bloating. Yet, despite those things, I’ve always just about managed to look ok, until now.

I do have DR after birth as well, picked up by GP and later a women’s physio. I feel that, even if I lost a bit of weight, I the weak core, DR and bulge will remain. I’m worried about a hernia later in life too.

I would be so grateful for any pointers about where to start in terms of fixing this. Some threads on here say a tummy tuck is the only way, others praise things like the Mutu system. I’m worried about joining a random “fitness programme” and doing myself harm.

Not afraid of hard truths or putting in the effort. Just not sure of the best way forward. What has worked for others?

On another thread today someone said cycling does wonders for DR.

Sorry meant to say I have a friend who had the same issue and found Pilates worked well to improve it.

Pilates all the way.

I have muscle separation plus a hernia. I have been heavier and now I am 'slim' my hernia bulges no matter what I do but it is much less prominent after doing some core workouts.

Hands down the best thing I have done is yoga. I just watch videos on YouTube, they have such a huge range and the great thing is you can tailor it to your own ability.

I also struggle with bloating and trapped wind and it really has been a god send.
It might also be worth finding out what is causing you to bloat, for me it was gluten, after I cut it out a lost a lot of weight plus stopped getting bloated.
