Can anyone 5'7"ish tell me how many steps they do in a 5k run?

I'm running for 30 minutes, but no idea how far I'm going, as I just do non-uniform laps around local park (avoiding dogs on leads with mine running free). So, I have no idea how to measure it, but I can count my steps. Can anyone enlighten me?

I do in and around 5,000 same height. Try Strava app it’s great for mapping runs.

empiricallyyours · 07/07/2020 23:32

@Mixitupalot thanks, that helps thank you. I'm doing between 4800 and 5100 each time. Will have a look at Strava thanks.

About 5000. 32” inside leg. 5’8”

empiricallyyours · 07/07/2020 23:48

Thanks @BikeRunSki, 5000 for you too does seem to confirm that I'm there or thereabouts. That's encouraging; I'm new to this running lark, so pleased I'm likely getting somewhere around 5k. I'm sticking to 30 minutes running for now until I build my strength up a bit, as I'm totally spent at the end, then I hope to increase it as I get stronger.

@empiricallyyours if you are new to running 30mins/5K is a fantastic start. Ive been running for years off and on but i had to start back to basics last year with C25K. That said i am very slow!

empiricallyyours · 08/07/2020 10:03

@Mixitupalot thanks, it's funny how we go in phases throughout the years isn't it. I haven't run in literally years and I've recently thought it would be a quicker way of getting a decent dog walk in. So, it wears us both out and gets me fitter. Win win hopefully.

as an alternative, you could try plotting your route on this: www.plotaroute.com/routeplanner

fellrunner85 · 08/07/2020 21:56

I did a fairly hilly, tempo 5k this morning in 4,446 steps.
You'll do more steps if you're slower and fewer if you're quicker, from my experience.

Squiz81 · 08/07/2020 22:26

I recommend Strava too, it’s great for seeing how you are progressing as it shows your pace.

resipsa · 08/07/2020 22:33

I'm 5 7 - 10000 = 5 miles for me so 5K would be about 6200 for me.

empiricallyyours · 09/07/2020 07:36

Thanks so much for all your replies. I've now downloaded the app and going for a gait analysis for new running shoes this morning.

OP it will be really interesting to see how far you have been running.

It always amuses me that C25k supposedly gets you up to running 5k at the end by doing a 30min run. But lots and lots and LOTS of new runners initially take more like 35-40 mins to run 5k! I know I was disappointed when I thought I was doing 5k in my allotted 30mins and it was actually only 4.5 or something. But you might be more speedy Smile

empiricallyyours · 09/07/2020 08:06

@Daisydoesnt I agree the couch to 5k should really be called couch to 30 minutes Grin

I think I'm likely to be running less than 5k, but I'm happy with doing whatever I can in the 30 minutes for now and then building up. I've surprised myself that I'm actually enjoying it. And so is the dog!

DrPeppersPhD · 10/07/2020 02:34

5'8" here, usually do around 5000 I'd say. 5K took me around 35 minutes at the start, it's gone up to 45 or so for a variety of reasons but the target is 25, point is don't get discouraged if it takes a while, you're doing really well!

songbirdsings · 10/07/2020 02:43

I’m 5’7 and 5k is 5500 steps for me (32 ish minutes but very hilly)

birdy124 · 10/07/2020 03:42

Your dog should be leashed

empiricallyyours · 10/07/2020 18:33

Really @birdy124, without knowing anything about where I run, why would you say that?

For what it's worth, my dog is friendly and tame and dogs are allowed to be off the lead in the park I go to run in. The majority of dogwalkers have their dogs off-lead there. The few people with their dogs on a lead have nervous or aggressive dogs, so I just keep my dog away from those dogs.

Update: Thanks again to everyone who shared their running info. I'm now the proud owner of my first proper running shoes, after having my gait analysed yesterday. Brooks Adrenaline 20 shoes. I downloaded the app and unfortunately I must have short legs, as I actually take 6,100 steps to do 5k, so I wasn't doing 5k in 30 minutes. I thought I would try running until I hit 5k and it took me 40 bloody minutes!! It's been a positive discovery though, as I now know that I can at least run 5k. Now I can concentrate on speeding it up a bit.

OP posts:
Daisydoesnt · 10/07/2020 19:23

Oh well done OP yes that is positive. You can run for 5k and 40 mins!

If you think about it your stride length varies according to your speed. When you run faster all you do is take longer strides and/or increase your footfall (cadence). So running more steadily almost always means your stride length is shortened. By the way, that is technically the right thing to do.

You’ll be up to 10k in no time!

empiricallyyours · 10/07/2020 19:32

Thanks @Daisydoesnt, yes that makes sense. I am a bit of a plodder, so I think I need to focus on speeding up and getting a bit lighter on my feet. I'm up for the challenge!

OP posts:
Squiz81 · 10/07/2020 19:33

If you look at the analysis of your run on Strava, there is a section called cadence which tells you how many steps you do per minute. My average today was 158 and my maximum was 172.

empiricallyyours · 10/07/2020 19:36

@Squiz81 ooh yes that would be useful, thanks for that, I'll have a look.

OP posts:
fellrunner85 · 10/07/2020 20:20

It's not short legs - it's more that, the slower you run, the more steps you take to cover the full distance.
And as a pp said, if you run faster, you'll cover more steps per minute (quicker cadence).

Looking at my Strava, the last time I ran a hard 5k (20 mins) I averaged 188 steps per minute. And the same week, I averaged 175 steps a minute for a steady (24 min) 5k.

Being able to cover the distance is great though, OP. 10k next!!

empiricallyyours · 10/07/2020 20:51

@fellrunner85 that's a relief that my legs aren't too short and there's some hope for me! Wow, you're one hell of a runner, a 20 minute 5k is incredible. One day Grin

It wasn't that long ago that a 5k used to take me 32 mins... it's amazing what some proper training can do!!

Thanks for sharing that, it really helps to know that progress is possible, however ploddy mcplodface we may be at the start.
