Running and stomach problems - probably TMI!

I eat breakfast before I run as I’m not good with low blood sugar. But about 10 mins in I feel like I need to “go” and feel rubbish and like I have to stop running. And not due to being tired or out of breath. But I don’t actually need to go when I get home. Like I said, tmi! Sorry Blush

I’m doing C25K so not going hard - I’m still on run/walk/run. Not overweight etc. Has anyone else felt like this?

How soon before you run are you eating? I need to leave it at least an hour so I’m not sloshing coffee, porridge and water about.

SoThisIsEmbarrassing · 07/07/2020 11:23

Usually at least half an hour but I will try and leave it an hour and see if that helps.

This isn't an issue I've ever suffered with but what are you having for breakfast? My friends who do get runners tum seem to think dairy is very implicated.

That said, the first 10 min of any run is the hardest. I've been running 15 years, anything up to marathon distance and I still have runs where I'm ready to give up in the first mile but settle down if I stick with it.

I need at least one hour between last food and half hour after last drink. orI need a bush 5 min into my run.

often queasyness is dehydration/salt imbalance rather than sugar.
try having a drink of hot water witha little bovril/marmite/stock powder before your run instead.

That’s interesting I do have milk with my porridge so I’ll try something else.

I’d never thought about that blue thanks. I wasn’t sure anyone would reply to this so thanks everyone!

Would a banana suffice before running?

I couldn't go out on full stomach 🤢

Congratulations though on doing C25K, it's brilliant!

ArtieFufkinPolymerRecords · 07/07/2020 14:06

I'll usually run on an empty stomach if running in the morning, or will eat a banana if feeling peckish. If I'm doing a longer run and need to fuel up, I will have porridge or something, but need to leave it at least an hour otherwise I feel nauseous.

TheHighestSardine · 07/07/2020 14:26

Like PP, I always run on an empty stomach (5k and under), but must be hydrated too. I can't do it at all if I've eaten in the last couple of hours, which makes for unfortunately tiny windows of opportunity for getting out for a run!

namechangecareerchange · 07/07/2020 14:29

Do you mean a wee or a poo? There's definitely runners' runs. I run a lot and if I don't watch my diet then I have to stop running sometimes and literally clench my bum.
Dried fruit is a massive culprit (even the day before) and dairy too. I eat no more than 1hr before running. But verbally on an empty stomach. That said, if I do eat too close to a run then it's a stitch rather than the shits!!

SoThisIsEmbarrassing · 07/07/2020 15:16

namechange poo.

It’s a good point about going on an empty stomach it’s just I know I easily get light-headed. I might try just having a banana though.

I say just try a banana too. I don’t like waking up and running on a completely empty stomach, a banana seems to suffice though.

If you don’t actually need to go, could you just tell yourself it’s psychological, ignore it and run through it?

theoracle11 · 09/07/2020 14:01

I wouldn't be able to run after eating, I'd get a stitch and just generally feel awful. If I go on an evening, it has to be a couple of hours after eating.
However, "runners tummy" is definitely a thing and sometimes running just makes you feel you need to go 🤷🏻‍♀️

fellrunner85 · 09/07/2020 23:03

I can't run after eating- I feel sick and need to go to the loo. I tend to run in the morning or at lunchtimes, and won't have had anything aside from coffee/tea since the night before. The only exception is if I'm in the long runs of marathon training and will be out for 18+ miles, in which case I'll try and get some cereal down before I go.

theoracle11 · 10/07/2020 20:51

Have you ran since? How was it?

SoThisIsEmbarrassing · 10/07/2020 22:00

Yes! I tried leaving it longer after eating and I had no problems. I will try just a banana when my period stops. Thanks for all the advice Smile
