I hope it's ok starting a new thread. I found the last one so encouraging and didn't want it to stop!!

Also, have to share I've just done W6R3 - my first 25 min run. Wasn't sure I was going to make it to the end, but kept moving (as Jo Whiley told me to) and did it!!

How are others getting on?

W6R1 isn't really much harder, it's just that people tend to set off too quickly because they think it's going to be easier than w5r3. Take it steadily and you'll be fine.

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 26/08/2020 08:31

OK thanks, I’m a plodder so hopefully that advice won’t be hard for me to follow. 😄

PrincessWatermelon · 26/08/2020 09:10

Thanks @UnaOfStormhold - you've explained what I meant really well! I didn't mean to scare you @JustHereWithMyPopcorn !!

We're almost at maximum posts. Would someone else like to start a new thread and post a link to it here, so we can find it? I wonder if it would be nice for a current c25k runner to start the new one, rather than me being a graduate?

I can’t believe I’m about to write this, but I had my first graduation run today, and I ended up running 5k nonstop! I’ve not run more than 4K before, and it was rather unexpected.

At first I was missing Jo encouraging me every few minutes. Checked my watch and I was at 26min, I was supposed to do 31 min today. Next time I checked I was at 36 min and just over 4K! Felt good, so thought I’d see if I could make it to 5k. And I did!

Honestly, until I started c25k, I’d never exercised in my life. Not even as a kid. I’m not a mum in my 40’s and I ran 5k this morning! This programme is magical. Just trust it. You can do it!

sleepyhead · 26/08/2020 16:00

Hurray for 5K! It really is amazing isn't it?

I did W5 R1 this morning after sacking off yesterday due to Storm Francis, and it was fine - really (slow) but fine. I think I'm starting to find my pace.

I'm gobsmacked at my progress. W1 R1 really did feel like max exertion for me, and realistically it was more sustained exertion than I'd done in years.

PrincessWatermelon · 26/08/2020 16:36

Whoop whoop @TeamEponine !!

Aaaahhh!!! I only went and did 5k in 29.05 😲😲😁😁. Have been pushing every few weeks to see if I could improve my time and get the sub-30mins. And totally smashed it today!! Feel really proud and like actually, I don't need to do that again for a long time!! It was too much like hard work!!

OP posts:
JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 27/08/2020 09:42

Congratulations PrincessWatermelon!! You should be proud about that!
I did my Wk 6 R1 with the advice given (you were right, it was sort of harder!) and took it fairly slow.

Any advice for tight calves? My muscles don't hurt anymore like the first week, I warm up and warm down properly with stretches for all muscle groups but my calves just feel very tight.

Muchtoomuchtodo · 27/08/2020 12:55

That’s a great time for 5kms @PrincessWatermelon 😲

Are your trainers in good condition @JustHereWithMyPopcorn? That can cause tight claves if they’re not a good fit or not very cushioned.

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 27/08/2020 14:53

Yes, they are new and are very comfortable. I've just been to see my chiropractor who has recommended cushioned insoles so will definitely look into those.

TeamEponine · 27/08/2020 17:54

Wow - we’ll done @PrincessWatermelon!

@JustHereWithMyPopcorn I get real problems with tight calves. I warm up by standing on the bottom step on my toes, and then bouncing my heels below the step, of you see what I mean?! 20 bounces the rise up on my toes and hold for 10 seconds. Do that five times. Works well for me, might be worth a try, if you’re not already doing something similar.

UnaOfStormhold · 27/08/2020 18:59

Fabulous work @TeamEponine

@JustHereWithMyPopcorn I can recommend James Dunne's videos on sore calves - it's a slow process but I can feel mine are getting stronger and less tight (and getting some muscle definition too!).

Congratulations @PrincessWatermelon - great time! Like you I feel my one sub-30 5k was a huge effort I'm not in a hurry to repeat, though I have noticed from strava that my not-pushing-it pace is steadily improving and my second best 5k time is becoming quicker. So all this training is doing something!

Do we have a volunteer for a new thread? I'd do it but I'm a graduate too!

PrincessWatermelon · 27/08/2020 20:18

Yes, you're right @UnaOfStormhold, my general pace and ease of running is improving. So I may come back around and give it another go in a month or so. But I definitely don't feel the need to keep doing it! I'm trying for a long run on Sunday...

StripyHorse · 27/08/2020 20:34

I have set up a new thread here.
www.mumsnet.com/Talk/exercise/4007578-C25k-get-your-encouragement-here?watched=1

I am just over half way through but I may need to repeat a week as I have walker but not run (and eaten sooooo much!).

Fauchelevant · 27/08/2020 20:34

Have you got a foam roller? I’ve found rolling my calves on one of them helps with tightness.

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 28/08/2020 08:56

Thank you all for the calf suggestions, I will look into all of them. Smile

Mortgagehelp2020 · 04/09/2020 22:46

Just started last Sunday. I have done a run a day so I am on week 3 run 1 which I did today and can feel tonight. I hate running and a glance ahead I cannot imagine getting to 8 mins let alone some of the jumps!

It’s not jumped this week, do you really notice it on future weeks? I am already anticipating repeating weeks

UnaOfStormhold · 05/09/2020 08:41

Mortgagehelp the rest days are there for a reason. If you're feeling it then I would definitely shift ti running every day. I also understand that there are some physiological changes that happen over weeks rather than days so running every day risks getting to the middle weeks without giving your body time to lay the groundwork needed. (Btw we're on a new thread now, see the link a few posts up.)

Mortgagehelp2020 · 05/09/2020 16:08

Thanks @UnaOfStormhold I appreciate you reply. I know when it gets harder I’ll do it more by weeks it’s just a way for me to get into a routine and daily has helped to be in a set routine. I’m looking at yoga for ‘rest days’ to help me. Will go to the other thread

MadameFarnaud · 17/03/2021 00:28
