Kettlebells, what do they do then?

Found dusty kettlebells in garage that dh once used.
Can anyone point me in the direction of a you tube (perhaps) workout for a beginner.
I'm not particularly strong . Although I am well within my healthy weight range I am not in great shape, crap legs.
Will kettlebells help?

I think I might be termed skinny fat?
Look fine in clothes but squishy in a swimming costume.

I do aTen minute Kettlebell workout called body fit with Amy. I have been doing it 'almost' daily throughout lockdown. I am pretty pleased with the results actually I have a very firm bum now!
It's on Youtube btw.

Kettlebells are just another type of weight - like dumbbells - but with a handle to hold them making certain types of exercise easier.

Leakinglikeacolander · 23/06/2020 13:51

Yes, I can see they have a handle, it's guidance towards the exercises I'm in need of.
I shall have a look at the Bodyfit one potatoes thanks.

Try looking at some of the qualified kettlebell instructors on youtube:

Marianne Kane (returning after having a baby, so has some recent beginner workouts but go back in her history and you'll find loads of workouts/demos)

She has an excellent video on the kettlebell swing, which is a foundational movement but tends to rarely be performed correctly by a lot youtubers out there:

Also, Redefining Strenght has lots of info on using kettlebells correctly:

And there is Mark Wildman, Lisa Balash and Lauren Brooks

All people who demonstrate strong form and have a great foundation in how to use kettlebells effectively. Personally, I wouldn't put Amy in these categoris and is not someone I'd suggest learning kettlebells from.

Make sure you don't put too much stress on your back if you choose to do the kettlebell swings, I got the worse back pain when I first ever did a kettlebell swing with a 6kg, had to rest it for over a week. However once I learnt the correct posture and technique, I have been able to strengthen my lower back and core, and can now kettlebell swing 20kg, although it was a gradual increase over a year of using the lower weights.

Kettlebell classes have helped me change my physique completely, I am so much more stronger now!

Hasfit have some beginner kettlebell workouts that are full body, and I use them regularly. Free to all on YouTube.

For technique (which you need to keep yourself safe) I look at Greg's website (link to follow) - he's got loads of free technique videos that show you how to do each exercise properly.

I started with a 4kg kettlebell and that was more than enough till I got the technique right, I'm now up to 8kg after just 6 weeks, so you increase strength pretty quickly.

I really like Megsquats - you'll find her on Instagram and YouTube. Her focus is on women, her aim is "to get a barbell into the hands of every woman."

She's down to earth, crazy strong, but also recognises that weights are often new territory for women. When I started weight training, her videos really gave me confidence.

For kettlebells, you can just do simple carries:
walking, or lunges (forwards & back) or walking lunges with kettlebell held at your side (hard) in front of your chest (harder), or carried above your head (hardest).

You can do squats, holding the kettlebell in front of your chest.

You can do dumbbell snatches.

And of course, kettlebell swings.
