I'm 5'9 and starting to enjoy running. I find I get sore knees and ankles if i do too many runs in a week, i need to give myself rest days .

Are you overweight? I used to be (and still am tbh) and I used to find that my knees hurt. This is all connected with muscle strength and what is stronger and therefore what is being pulled in/out of alignment. The more I run the better it becomes and now I am fine. I am 5ft 11" if that helps?

I'm 5'1 and have painful knees from running so not sure it's height. It got worse as I increased my mileage (I did the GNR last year which is my longest run).

I eventually went to a physio about it and he was great. It's an issue with my IT band and due to a weakness in my hips, core and bum. Even though they're boring (well I think so) some strength exercises specifically for running might help you. There a lot of you tube videos out there with advice but physio gave me the plank, side plank, single legged squats and hip lifts to do. He then gave me some weights to do later. He also advised me to reduce my stride length but increase my pace.

Some physio tape might also give you some support when running. Again, watch the you tube videos on how to put them on to your knees.

Its a you thing, and most probably down to your trainers

emmathedilemma · 25/06/2020 17:17

Agree it's most likely due to your trainers and/or posture. If you over or under pronate then you will tend to feel it in your knees when you run. Did you get your trainers fitted at a specialist shop that does gait analysis? Or some people run in a really weird way like their knees are tied together and fling their feet round to the sides.....that must also hurt!

It’s a you thing. It could be down to any number of things,

  • Your footwear
  • Your gait (the way your foot hits the floor)
  • Referred pain/knees overcompensating with weakness elsewhere - often pain down the chain means an issue further up e.g. knee pain = hip/glutes issue, ankles = knee issue etc.
  • Overdoing it (too fast, too far, too often or a combination of some/all)
  • Not cross training your supporting muscles (also linked to the referred pain issue). It is important to do other exercises to support your running and prevent injury. Things like swimming, yoga and strength training are all recommended.

Hope you feel better soon Smile
