Losing tummy flab without looking gaunt

I know nothing about exercise and so would be very grateful for advice.

I've always been reasonably slim but have started to develop quite a lot of belly fat in recent years. I'm 48, so I guess this isn't too surprising.

If I'm stressed out, I sometimes lose a bit of weight, but I find it always comes off my face (making me look gaunt) and my chest (so my ribs start to show) leaving my belly as wobbly as ever.

What type of exercise would help me to lose weight round my tummy and, ideally tone up my arms a little, without making me too thin elsewhere.

I'm 5'6 and about nine stone by the way.

Many thanks for any suggestions.

Hi @Spry, unfortunately you can't spot-reduce fat, you burn fat and you body decides where the fat comes from! I would say if you build muscle, you'll get a bodyshape you'll like more than "gaunt". Strength exercises and lifting weights will be really good for you, see this great explanation of it

@Spry I’m the same!

You can't choose where fat goes from and you can't reduce fat by exercise alone.
Get into a calorie deficit but be prepared for it to go all the places you don't want first
