Running ankle injury

Not sure if this is the right place to post but just wondered if anyone had had any previous ankle injuries & could offer any advice.

I'm presuming I must have twisted my ankle when running (although I can't remember doing it, I just recall it hurting on the cool down walk)

This was 5 day ago, no swelling or bruising at all, doesn't hurt to touch and I can walk but it hurts and it really hurts if I bear weight on just that ankle, i keep having shooting pains from my ankle to my knee and sometimes when I'm just sitting. I get a sharp pain in my ankle / my knee.

I've only just managed my 2nd 5k after completing C25k last week so I am really annoyed that this is now holding me back.

Any advice appreciated!

Thanks

Whereabouts in your ankle?

Have you seen physio recently, because if so I'd see if they can give phone advice (some might for existing clients, but less likely if starting from scratch)

Thanks

It's on the outside of the ankle and the pain shoots up by my shin to my knee.

No, I haven't, il have a look into it though. Thanks :)

Not an injury I've had!

Looking for a physio who will see you, or do a video consultation, might be your best bet.

The rule of thumb is to rest until it really stops hurting (especially one sided pain, which is unlikely to be general overuse) and restart gently. Make sure you include strength/flexibility exercises - google for rehab programmes, many NHS physio handouts are available on line.

Personally, when in one sided pain, I would go to an osteopath - I find they are the best practitioners for mechanical issue in the body.

But if you find you really cannot weight bear, then get it x-rayed. There's a type of fracture called avulsion and you need proper immobility (pot or fracture boot) for 3-6 weeks (depending on its severity and you ur age). But you'd probably have noticed if you had twisted badly enough for that.

I don't know if you can get stress fractures there.

I've been told by physios never to ignore sharp or shooting pain; general aches and twinges are usually okay with a little rest but the pain you describe sounds like it needs an x ray/further attention! Good luck, I can imagine how frustrating this is for you.
