V v long sorry but looking for advice.

I am vaguely fit but not very. Can run slowly but surely when not injured, do hiit/body conditioning a couple of times a week, lots of v long walks regularly etc. So not a beginner but not much more iyswim. About a stone overweight. Mid 40s. I like to exercise first thing in the morning before breakfast usually.

Today went for a family bike ride. DC and DH ride a lot and go quite fast. I do not usually cycle and do t love it but am trying to let my hip injury heal and also family activity. Route is very hilly and takes about 1.5-2 hours of up and downs. I hate the hills beyond all measure.

We went mid morning so I had breakfast (eggs/1 piece of toast). Not huge amount to drink. I felt fairly meh from the get go, legs achy and a bit drained. Got to one hill (one of the steeper ones but not the worst) and whilst I got to the top I felt properly faint, incredibly wobbly legs, heart was hammering and I had to get off and sit down. Took me a good 5 minutes to recover and even then still felt shaky. Carried on and about 15 mins later we stopped for a proper break where I had water and a banana. Then off I went home and was fine including a bigger hill.

So did i

A, not eat enough
B, not drink enough
C, just not fit enough to manage the hill
D, combo of all of the above

How to I improve? Do I need to do a bit more hill climbing? Other exercise which will help? Kids love the activity and I want to keep up. Plus not faint on the road obvs.

Could you maybe just have been hungry? I feel like this when my blood sugar is low (shaky, breathless, cold sweat). Next time maybe take a healthy snack like a banana or a good handful of nuts and see if it helps?

2 hours of hilly cycling when you're not used to it would be quite a shock to your system. Just because you are fit doing one activity doesn't mean that you'll take easily to another which uses different muscles. I'd say you didn't fuel properly and your body wasn't ready for it. I love cycling, but it's taken me a while to get fit enough to love it, I think. I'd do shorter rides and build up to a longer distance.
