Skipping rope

Hi, I'm getting fat Sad I thought skipping might be good as I'm stuck at home. Can anyone recommend one please? I'm 5'3" if that makes a difference. I'd love an exercise bike or a bike trainer but the prices have multiplied massively since lockdown.

Oh wow - you're me! (Down to the very last detail.) Grin

This morning I cogitated for yet another hour and finally plumped first the Valour Strike leather rope, in slight but uncertain preference to the Beast Gear Pro Advanced (so pretty!). Should arrive early next week.

Given how much I love skipping it's surprising I haven't owned a rope for years. Even before the global pandemic I couldn't stand the thought of a gym full of other people's germs so prefer alternative ways of keeping fit.

One thing - if your knees are totally fine I'd strongly suggest a weighted hula hoop. Really excellent for core strengthening and very enjoyable to use - but I've noticed my bad knee is worse afterwards so ...

Will let you know how the rope turns out ...

Hmm plumped for, not 'first' ...

SistemaAddict · 06/06/2020 12:17

Thanks Smile my knees and back are buggered but as I can't do my usual 5 miles of walking a day or my bike ride then I need to do something. Clothes are snug now Sad perimenopause is not helping either. Things will wobble alarmingly skipping but I'll do it in private and try not to cry Grin

I quite fancy one with a counter so that I can set targets. My dc will interrupt and I'll lose count if I try to count myself. I don't know if they are any good though.

Ah ... I wasn't planning anything so structured. I may set a timer on my phone.

SistemaAddict · 08/06/2020 14:54

I've got the beast one. It will take some getting used to

Mine arrived yesterday!

The handles are nicely weighty and after a bit of YouTube guidance I've managed to shorten the rope by about seven inches.

I'm clearly much less fit than I was the last time I used one. First few tries this morning my brain continuously tripped me up after 25 skips. Hope it won't take longer than a few days to get into the swing of it.

SistemaAddict · 09/06/2020 10:31

I'm about to give it a go now. I just hope my pelvic floor is going to cope Blush

I have a speed rope with weighted handles, can't remember the make. I'm not great at it but can go all guns ablazing for about two minutes, twenty seconds rest, another two minutes etc for about five sets. It is exhausting. Of all the exercise I've ever done I think it's the most exhausting. But really really good.

I do second the recommendation for a hula hoop, they're great. I'm only just getting into it but I swear it's improving my waist already with only about ten minutes most days while I watch a bit of telly. We rarely watch live TV but when Celebrity SAS was on I hula hooped through all the ad breaks. I'm sure Ant would approve.

SistemaAddict · 09/06/2020 20:25

I am rubbish at hula hooping. Dd1 would be Olympic class but I'm useless. There's a way to do it effectively I guess?
I managed 24 skips in one go before the rope caught and I peed my pants a little Blush
Before that I did 14 in one go.
I've whipped myself with it when it catches and it bloody hurts.

Blush I can hula hoop from now to the end of the week, in one direction. I can barely manage five rotations in the other direction ...

evilharpy · 10/06/2020 09:15

Everyone has one good direction and one bad direction apparently. I certainly do. In my bad direction I eventually lose momentum and the hoop slows down a lot although I can keep it going. I'm getting better though!

Coulddowithanap · 10/06/2020 10:27

I saw this thread and dug out my skipping rope. Managed a couple of minutes but I was so sore thr next few days I'm scared to do it again lol I guess my legs will get used to it if I keep doing it.

Pirisprinkles · 10/06/2020 11:13

I use a cheap skipping rope, something like this :
www.decathlon.co.uk/essential-skipping-rope-id_8353198.html
I usually do 3 X 3min, with 30 seconds rest between rounds, as a warm up.

I really want to get a hula hoop now! Grin

PerditaProvokesEnmity · 10/06/2020 12:10

Mine has a 'polished steel rotational mechanism' (ball bearings, presumably?) which meant nothing to me until I tried it. But it's so fast. It has its own momentum - feels very different to the rope being limited by how fast I turn it.
