Hello all, just a quick question .... when did you start running every day? I’ve only just started out really, am on week 6 of C25K and it works on running every other day and having a rest day in between. Im finding myself increasingly keen to go out on some of my rest days for a run. I haven’t done it yet as I don’t want to push myself too far and then ruin the progress I’ve made. However, when would it be ok to go every day? My husband says I should just go and see!
Thanks.

Be cautious! Rest is really important both for effective training and to reduce the chance of injury. I usually run 6 days a week, but a couple of these are very gentle - virtually rest days.

Maybe add one gentle run to your schedule to start, making sure you don't do three runs in a row.

I've been running for about 15 years. Even now, I wouldn't dream of running everyday, although I do exercise everyday I have at least one day off running for something lower impact.

I only really run 6 days per week when I'm on specific training for an event, usually 4-5 times is plenty. When I am doing 6 runs at least two will be "easy" runs which you don't really get as a beginner, every run is quite hard on your body.

Runners are very prone to over use injuries because of the repetitive nature so it's important to get the balance right and increase mileage and number of runs very gradually.

C2C is an excellent programme for beginners, my advice would be to stick with it, even if you think you could progress more quickly, it builds up at just the right pace to protect you. Cycle or walk on the inbetween days if you want to, or try yoga which complements running very well.

I'm glad you're enjoying it, welcome to the club!

Yes don't overdo it - I've been running for decades and love it but always get injured if I start enjoying myself too much...

I don't say that to be mean-spirited but because there is nothing worse than building up to LOVING your running and suddenly not being able to because you've screwed your Achilles or whatever. It's awful!

I started running every day once I got up to week 7 of c25k and have triggered an over use injury in my hip and knee. So now I can't run at all and I'm v sad because of it.

Iamblossom · 27/05/2020 14:57

I can't run every day because it really hurts my back. I do 10km 3 times a week.

NoTeaForMe · 27/05/2020 15:20

Ok. I’ll carry on with every other day. I’m doing some Pilates/yoga on my rest days so am still doing something. I just don’t quite have the motivation to do that in the same way as the running. I used to enjoy it when I went to a class a couple of years ago so I’ll stick with it. I think it’s better to do with a class but at least I had done it before and therefore know the basics.

I’m just the last person anyone would expect to exercise but I’m really enjoying it and not failing miserably at it which has made me really keen!

You can bike on some rest days, but you do need at least 1 rest day even on high level training plans!

MrsTerryPratchett · 27/05/2020 15:31

That enthusiasm is great but you'll hurt yourself. Maybe weights on your off days?

AnnaNimmity · 27/05/2020 15:38

I run every day but can't do long (or even medium) runs every day. I agree 4/5 days of proper runs (and for me that's some 5km and one or two longer ones) is best. I have a dodgy back and knees and can't do it every day at full pelt - or if I do, I just feel too tired.

Riding or yoga in between and lots of walking, works for me.

veryvery · 27/05/2020 19:45

I run just over 6 miles everyday. I'm fine with it. I don't run particularly hard though. I run a circuit and sometimes even do extra laps without noticing it if I lose count of my laps which really shows I am not running too hard!Grin I actually feel better when I run. It loosens me up. More aches during a rest period when we have gone to stay with family etc.

lastqueenofscotland · 28/05/2020 15:53

I run every day but it took me a while to build up to doing so. Maybe just add one extra run a week for now, and then another.

LaLaLanded · 28/05/2020 20:14

I run every day but only 4-5 of those are “proper” runs - after a long or fast running session I’ll do a slow 5k the next day, just to keep my legs ‘warm’.

If you’re going to increase your running do make sure you warm up and cool down, and perhaps increase your strength work. I use barre exercises for strength, dynamic stretching before a run. And always walk for 5-10 minutes before and after a run. This seems to work.

You can increase amount of runs p/week. Or, what I did, was start off with very short runs every day (I could do longer but toned it down as it was everyday) and then increasing the length of all the runs over time. Now I mix it up across the week.

Stumpedasatree · 29/05/2020 22:40

I run most days too, probably 6 out of 7. As PPs have said I need to vary the pace and distance, my minimum distance is 4 miles which I usually do quite fast, but I do longer distances around 2 or 3 times a week, anything from 6-13 miles at a slower steadier pace. I also go by feel, if I'm tired or achy or injured I obviously take it slower or skip a day.
