Runners - do I need new shoes?

I have a new pair of Asics, in a size larger than my usual 6. Very comfortable and fit well. They are fine on short runs under 10 miles. Anything over that and my toes are painful during the run as they seem to be hitting the top end of the shoe.

I am loathe to get another pair but I can't imagine running a marathon in these Confused

Yes, get ones with a nice big toe box as your current ones don't sound like they fit properly - either they are too small or they don't fit right and your foot is sliding in them and hitting the front as you strike ground. You'll end up losing some toenails if you keep that up - been there! Hoka One Ones are generally good for big toes cages - super comfortable but ugly as sin! Do you have a wide foot?

I’ve always had ASICS but the last pair I bought seem smaller and narrower. I’m thinking of buying men’s in future to get more width.

Yes I have a wide foot. So frustrating as these are new shoes!

Wide Feet - New Balance
Narrow feet - Adidas

Brook's!! I used to run in Asics for a few years, then swapped to brooks earlier this year. Nice and cushioned and wide enough for my feet. My Asics are fine for shorter runs but when I do longer ones and my feet swell they are too narrow!

Stumpedasatree · 27/05/2020 08:45

@carmelsundae sounds just like me! Which Brooks do you have? I have worn Brooks but found the upper was tearing after a few months so gave up. But maybe I'll give them another go.

I've got GTS addrenaline 20. I asp over pronate and the support in these are great! I've done just under 700km in my current pair and they are generally still fine. I have however just ordered a pair of saucony omni just it mix it up. They seem to have good cushioning but I haven't actually ran in them yet!

emmathedilemma · 27/05/2020 15:41

Brooks do a wider fit in some models. Have a look at Altras, they'll take a bit of wearing in but people who they fit seem to love them.

BogRollBOGOF · 27/05/2020 17:52

Do you use a lace lock at the top of the shoe to hold the ankle steady?

It's made a massive difference to the way trainers fit me. Sometimes I have to skip lace holes lower down to save more lace for the top. There's plenty of examples on google.

Can you just use these for short runs, so that you get the wear out of them, and buy a better fitting pair for long runs? It's not ideal but it's a work-around. It's good having 2 pairs at once anyway, it gives them more time to dry out between runs.

Tootles2 · 27/05/2020 18:04

I have wide toes and wear Brooks Ghost or NewBalance 1080 both in a wide fit . I’m normally a 3.5 - 4 in normal shoes , but a 4.5 in the Brooks and a 5.5 in New Balance.

Tootles2 · 27/05/2020 18:06

Sorry. make that a 5 in New Balance !

veryvery · 27/05/2020 19:40

Altra shoes have an extra wide toe box as a feature of all their shoes. They are also zero drop. I have just bought these:
