Home gym

I've been really enjoying working out from home over the last few months, especially as I'm working from home and no more 3 hour round trip commute, so I've a bit more time in the morning. I'm considering quitting gym membership and focusing on building a home gym bit by bit. I already run outside a few times a week but would quite like a treadmill, and I have a few dumbbells and kettlebells but would get a few more over time. What else would you consider essentials? A rower? More free weights?

Any recommendations for home YouTube workout channels also welcomed - I've enjoyed bodyfit by Amy and fitness blender so far.

I love Les Mills.

If you like the free ones monthly membership is about £10 I think.

I wouldn't consider anything "essential". Personally I wouldn't bother with big equipment (but I do have a small house!). I have a skipping rope and I run outdoors, for cardio.

I have resistance bands, pair of sliders, a kettlebell, and adjustable dumbbells. If I were to expand, I would go for a couple of heavier kettlebells and a TRX.

If I had massive amounts of space and money, I'd get a squat rack, barbell and plates, and a bench, before I got cardio machines. There are loads of ways to get cardio exercise, but if you want to build up weights, you need a bit of support...

Thanks both. The space I'm thinking of using is the size of a small double bedroom. Big enough for one or two larger pieces. Thinking of rack and rower, maybe eventually a treadmill space permitting....

I've got a rack, bench and Olympic barbell and it's been an absolute life saver. DP has always had one but I've never used it and just went to the gym. Now I'm glad he's antisocial! 😂 Between the rack and a couple sets of dumbbells I've been able to do my complete strength workout. Probably wouldn't bother with cardio equipment as there's loads you can do without it but you can't replicate the barbell!

Treadmills were designed for prisoners. I'm with @Talulahoopla, I wouldn't buy any machine for cardio but strength training is worth investing in. I'd love a proper rack for squats and bench presses. I'm making do with garden furniture, bands and a decathlon version of the TRX, but actually I'm really enjoying working out at home and not sure whether I'd go back to a gym now. Although the weather helps!

Hi, so Essentials I would consider to be

1: Some Free Weights, Dumbbells
2: Yoga Mat
3: A Weight Bench

Thats it, simple but you can so many exercise and workout with just those, the bench can be used for sit ups, incline and decline dumbell presses overhead presses..

Essentially you can work your arms, shoulder, chest, abs, core with just those.

I would suggest getting a few weight plates and 2 dumbbell bars and a bench press bar, that way a set of weight plates ranging from 0.5kg to 10kg - 20kg

Can be used to make up a adjustable set of dumbbells, an adjustable chest press bar, free weights for core work such as weighted dips, over the head work outs and workout on the bench.

Add a Gym ball to sit in instead of the bench for more core toning.

Home Gyms seem to have really taken of recently and you can get some great home gym products from places such as www.homefitnesscorp.com or www.amazon.com

I have pretty much all I need (bar a heavy bag and a squat rack).

I have:

mat
resistance bands of various types
KO8 (suspension trainer with resistance options - very versatile and a fantastic piece of kit)
Bar and plates
Adjustable dumbbells
One kettlebell
Bench

I wouldn't give house room to any piece of cardio equipment if someone paid me. Well, maybe a rower if I was forced to have something.
