Has lockdown changed the number of daily steps you do?

Interested to know what other people with fitness trackers have observed...

Pre lockdown isn't a great comparator for me as I was marathon training but I definitely noticed a drop in the number of daily steps I was doing, even with an attempt to exercise regularly.

Pre lockdown I was averaging about 14,000 - 15,000 steps a day - obviously the marathon training contributed to this but I was also walking an hour and a half a day to and from the station etc, around London...other than the running many of the steps just happened normally as part of life.

Since lockdown I am wfh so no longer walk as part of my commute - also very busy at work so not much time to take the dog etc out at lunch. I've been trying really, really hard to keep my activity levels up and they're now around 12,000 a day but i'm having to actively make time multiple times a day to exercise in order to achieve that. If I wasn't going out of my way to walk and run i can easily imagine they would be very low - i've had busy days at work where i've walked fewer than 1000 steps by 6pm. Yikes.

My step count has gone right down. I do like to hit 10,000 steps (and much of that is often through doing a workout rather than actually walking somewhere) but there have been many days where I haven't left the house and have had less than 5,000. I was ill one day last week and think I finished the day on about 1,300 steps but that's an anomaly.

I'm not bone idle though. I've been doing plenty of exercise but often it's on a spin bike which doesn't add to the step count.

Yes I used to do at least 14k per average weekday day with the school run, 18k on a work day (part time), now I do barely 10k which includes a walk with the kids. If I do 30 day shred or a jog I might creep it up towards 11k.

WeKnowFrogsGoShaLaLaLaLa · 18/05/2020 12:49

Yes. I used to average 21k steps a day on work days. Now I manage about 8k if we go for a walk. It's very frustrating as I had been exercising on top of the steps and dieting to lose weight and my lack of movement has caused my weight loss to slow right down too.

Surprisingly, I'm finding I do more steps during my working day than I used to. It must be because I have more room to pace about on the phone than I do in my office at work Grin

Honeyroar · 18/05/2020 13:11

Mine have dropped too. I was training for a 25 mile walk, so regularly doing 10+ miles. When lockdown started I stayed local and did about 3 hilly miles. Now the walk is cancelled I have lost my drive a little, even though I could be out longer.

wowfudge · 18/05/2020 13:44

I have no idea how many steps I did when I was working in the office. My commute was by car. I've been for quite a lot of walks, but now I've adjusted to working from how I'm going for fewer, longer walks. I walked six miles on Saturday. It's got busier out the past few weeks so I find walking further afield means there's less chance of having to try to keep 2m from hoards of other people out and about.

Definitely, I'm a primary school teacher, spend all day racing around, walk to & from work and pre lockdown my average was between 16000 - 20000.
I'm currently working from home and I dread to think what my step count is now Confused
It's an eye opener though, I've always been convinced I'm slim because of my active lifestyle but 8 weeks at home, eating cake and barely moving, my weight is the same!
I've always been cynical about the fast/slow metabolism theory but less so now.

My step count has gone right down. I was averaging 12k plus before lockdown. I’m now on about 4K and have been gaining weight

Whyhellodaffodil · 18/05/2020 22:29

Yes! I’ve had to dig out an old Fitbit so I can make sure I hit at least 10k a day and it can be a struggle. Whereas before lock down I was walking at least 4 miles a day to and from school/ Work as well as exercising at they gym so stopped wearing it as I knew I’d done my steps. Working from home, only doing short local walks with dc and eating more means I am feeling very uncomfortable in my clothes Hmm. Wearing the Fitbit definitely helping now though

megletthesecond · 19/05/2020 23:32

I'm down to 16k WFH, I used to go over 20k walking to work. I have to get out individually with each child which is luckily keeping me well over the 10k level.

MajesticWhine · 19/05/2020 23:42

My steps are way down due to not walking to school or tube station on the way to work, walking to catch bus home etc. I am trying to have a walk after work, and sometimes a run. Probably down to about 6-8k on a workday, can manage a lot more on my non working days.

Dinosauratemydaffodils · 19/05/2020 23:46

Yes, I'd walk on average 5km a day pre lockdown. I'd also go for a run most nights. Haven't left the house since Friday. No motivation and nowhere to go.

Ronnie27 · 19/05/2020 23:53

I feel like I hardly move! I try to run at least 5k a day during lockdown so keep my steps up but barely do any distance around the house etc. Previously I’d only be walking from the car park in work, up and down to the toilet in the office, back and forth meetings, maybe Tesco for lunch, clubs with the kids after work etc but the day to day change is pretty dramatic! I feel like I shouldn’t be eating as much tbh as probably don’t need the calories.
