If you have strong, shapely arms

What are you doing?

My arms are slim-ish so I guess that’s a positive, but I’d love strong, shapely arms. If you have them - how? Do you lift weights or do press-ups or what?

Les Mills body pump at least 3 x a week made the most difference to my arms and shoulders.

Looking at it it seems I would need a barbell to do body pump. Is that right? Could I use hand weights (all I have right now) instead do you think?

I'm following with interest as I'm in a similar situation - I have quite slim arms and no upper body strength or muscle definition whatsoever!

Les Mills body pump classes didn't work for me as I ended up hurting my shoulder and it's still not right 8 months later. I probably had poor form though and the classes were so busy that the instructor didn't have the chance to correct it.

I've got some hand weights and have been doing a few workout videos on YouTube during lockdown. I'm not sure it's making much of a difference though and I'm worried about aggravating my shoulder again!

Kettlebells - as heavy as I could manage. I did a weightlifting course too, exactly to avoid crocking myself (arthritis in many places including my back). Now the gym's shut during lockdown so my arms will need work as I've no weights of my own at home!

Definitely resistance training. Weight lifting. The idea is to build the muscle under the skin, that’s what causes the desired shape you’re after.

Watching with interest.
I normally swim 3/4 times a week and my shoulders are in decent shape by my arms are weedy and flabby.

Definitely resistance training. Weight lifting.

This. Your own weight will do if you have nothing else. Press ups, pull ups.

inwood · 14/05/2020 13:02

I do powerwave and HIIT.

hamstersarse · 14/05/2020 13:04

I do no specific exercises for arms yet I have lean shapely arms. I think it’s very genetic at the heart of it

Obviously weights can influence but I think you got to be realistic about what god gave you

I second Les Mills Body Pump - the difference is unbelievable!

TeaAndHobnob · 14/05/2020 13:13

Definitely weights.

I used to climb two or three times a week and they looked good. Trying to replicate with push ups, tricep dips, pull ups and so on. Not quite the same but it's better than nothing.

Confusedbutheyho · 14/05/2020 13:13

Try the Chloe Ting workout called Sexy back and arms - she just uses resistance but bloody hell does it work.

somewheresorted · 14/05/2020 13:13

Push ups!

Confusedbutheyho · 14/05/2020 13:13

Must try the Les Mills one as I have some dumbbells.

ImperfectTents · 14/05/2020 13:14

Yoga

I recommend carrying a toddler around. I've never had such muscular arms!
