I really feel like I'm going wrong somewhere - I just can't seem to find exercise enjoyable. I force myself to do it and find it so awful I can't bare the thought of sticking at it for long.

I've tried everything - it just makes me feel horrible, sick and out of breath and takes all day to get over. I want to love it and keep at it but is it a slow grower?
I have 2.5st to lose and really need a kick up the backside.

I sound like such a wimp don't I, someone tell me to get a grip

I love exercising outside. I don’t always enjoy it whilst I’m doing it but I feel amazing afterwards. Why not try couch to 5k? Make sure you drink enough water and eat well too.

I've always found any kind of intense exercise enjoyable, most recently CrossFit / Strongman type stuff, I love the challenge. On the other hand I can never get into Yoga / Pilates type stuff I find it so boring.

My husband is a bit like you I think, never been into any kind of sport or exercise, hates gyms, just doesn't enjoy it. He had a PT for a while but hated this feeling you describe of nausea and feeling hot. Since being told his weight and cholesterol need to come down though he's been fast walking an hour a day and doing a 20 min weight / resistance circuit using an online app. He doesn't enjoy it but is looking at it like a prescription / medicine that needs to be done. He's definitely enjoying the results.
Do you think it would help for you to approach it like that?

To start off you will feel out of breath but it will get easier then you will feel great that you can exercise for longer .
I like the feeling afterwards that I Feel good it's great for mental health too .

I don't like running or swimming or cycling. I find anything like that just boring and repetitive and I could never stick to it but I have found I love weight training and HIIT stuff. I love the challenge and the rush of ripping a heavy barbell off the ground or over my head.
More recently I've been getting into yoga as well and I have surprised myself that I enjoy the meditation aspects, breathing, subtle movements.
I also enjoy a walk and don't find that boring because I can appreciate my surroundings then.
I think it's been shown that walking every day is really effective for weight loss because it's more about moving more every day rather than putting in a huge effort twice a week, overeating as a reward and giving up cos you hate it.
Maybe you'd be better off to stop forcing yourself to do stuff you hate and just concentrate on moving a bit more day to day?

It’s ghastly and I hate it, but I do it because it’s in my long term interests to be fit and well. Maybe stop expecting to like it and just grit your teeth and get through it? Focus on the end rather than the means...

KellyHall · 02/05/2020 14:53

When you say you've tried everything, can you tell us exactly what? There are so many ways of keeping/getting fit, I'm sure one of us will have a useful suggestion you haven't tried.

I don't like the thought of doing it or even putting my exercise clothes on. But once ive got over half way of my work out or run i start to feel more positive. And when ive completed it i feel like wonder woman both mentally and physically. Getting of the settee is half the battle but so worth it

hotcrossbun4321 · 02/05/2020 15:31

I'm very new to regular exercise and don't always enjoy it whilst I'm doing it - I'm 5st overweight so much lungs scream at me and it hurts. BUT as someone who suffers with depression, the act of putting on my trainers and getting out the door makes me feel competent, productive, that I'm treating my body well. I love coming back from a run and having a good shower and feeling that I've achieved something.
