Les Mills or Figure 8

Gwenhwyfar · 02/05/2020 12:05

I'm currently still paying my gym subscription because I'm still being paid and they provide access to Les Mills online, although annoyingly you have to give your card details so there's always the possibility of forgetting to cancel and ending up paying at some point. I like Body Attack, but don't know about their other stuff.

On the other hand, I've heard good things about Figure 8. What do people think of it? I'm not sure hip gyrations and the like are good for me - zumba makes me sick for example. Any advice welcome.

I should add that I don't have a DVD player so would be doing Figure Eight using the online only.

Les Mills at £12 per month. There's usually offers around for a free trial to start with. The range of workouts is so diverse. Pump, combat, barre, balance, dance and lots more. Definitely try out some of the other workouts apart from attack.

nbee84 · 02/05/2020 13:04

Surprised that your gym is still charging too. Most I know have suspended membership fees and are still providing online content.

Gwenhwyfar · 02/05/2020 13:22

I can freeze if I want to, but they sent a begging email asking people to help them stay in business so I thought I'd stay and use the online. However, I haven't done it and neither have I been jogging outside more than twice. Obviously, if I chose to do Figure Eight instead, I'd cancel/freeze the gym.

I’d like to know about Les Mills too - is there anything suitable for a not very fit person? They all look very fit from what I’ve seen.

QueenOfTheAndals · 02/05/2020 18:11

East Riding Leisure Centre are offering a 60 day free trial of Les Mills if you go via their website. You don't even need to be a member there. If you've had a trial with LM just use a different email address. The monthly fee after the trial is discounted too - £7.95 instead of £9.95.

Link - https://eastridingleisure.co.uk/lmod/

@littlemiss74 you can follow one of their programmes for beginners and then work your way up from there.

Littlemiss74 · 02/05/2020 18:17

That’s great thank you @QueenOfTheAndals

I like body combat on les mills - no equipment needed. Takes a while to get used to it, but provides a good workout. Bodypump is good too, but you need some hand weights at least. If you have the full 800 class access lots of shorter workouts and introductory videos to try them out.

I started doing combat and bodypump when I was very unfit and it was tough but doable. They give you different options for beginners.

Gwenhwyfar · 02/05/2020 20:00

Body Attack is a kind of aerobics so you can do the low impact options e.g. walking rather than jogging, skip the jumping. I might be at that stage now after months of inactivity. I tried to go jogging today (used to jog on the treadmill in the gym) and ended up walking instead.

I LOVE body combat! Do it every day now!
It's absolutely brilliant, you go at what ever level suits you.
Also body balance
And body pump if you have some weights

Littlemiss74 · 02/05/2020 20:16

@Gwenhwyfar my gym are offering Les Mills free too so I’m going to have a look at this. I think these are the classes they run at my gym but I’ve never done them - they always look like very fit people are doing them & I worry I wouldn’t be able to keep up! How do people find it compares doing these alone at home compared to doing them in the gym? I have a feeling i might prefer it.

Littlemiss74 · 02/05/2020 20:18

@notcycling have you always done them at home or did you do them at the gym? How long does each class last roughly? I’m pretty unfit so not sure I could manage an hour straight off.

SueEllenMishke · 02/05/2020 20:22

I love the Les mills app.
Loads of classes to choose from. I've used it loads during lockdown and I'm definitely fitter.

thirstyformore · 02/05/2020 20:26

@Littlemiss74 you can choose different lengths of classes. From 20 minutes through to an hour. They give you various impact options so if you're a little less fit you can choose the lower impact, and build up.

I really enjoy body combat. Nice all round workout. Don't need too much space or any equipment.

LycraLovingLass · 02/05/2020 20:28

Les Mills currently have one of each type of their workouts online for free without signing up if you want to test them.

I am really enjoying them.

neonjumper · 02/05/2020 20:31

I ummed and ahhed very this . I went for Les Mills. If you have UNiDAYS you get a 25% discount on membership .

As someone mentioned , so much variety on the app . I'm a body pump fan but will definitely try some of the other classes as well .

notcycling · 03/05/2020 10:38

@Littlemiss74
I do them at the gym. I love the format - one song per routine, each concentrating on different part of the body etc.
I used to be obsessed with bodypump about 10 years ago (did multiple classes a week) but now I prefer combat.
Their online classes are different lengths so you can start with 20 min ones and work your way up to the 55 min ones. Also, there are different options you can chose so tailor the workout to your ability.
You will like it, it's a really positive, uplifting workout with great music!

For all the workouts, LesMills release new routines every couple of months so you there are plenty of releases and workouts to chose from.
My favourite combat is release 72 :)

Good luck!

Abraid2 · 03/05/2020 10:41

Combat is my favourite.

I sometimes do Grit if I'm feeling masochistic. I am today. I know I'll be a howling mess afterwards.

notcycling · 03/05/2020 10:42

Also, if you have never done it before, it might be worth checking out the combat Getting started videos. They will talk you through the main combat moves etc.

notcycling · 03/05/2020 10:42

I've just finished Combat (release 75!)

oof! good luck @Abraid2

Gwenhwyfar · 03/05/2020 10:45

Just looked up Grit and it seems you'd need quite a bit of equipment for it.

OP posts:
Abraid2 · 03/05/2020 10:52

Not for the cardio version of Grit. I don't do the strength Grit, which does use weights.

I am still doing BodyPump with make-do weights (don't have a bar bell). I use dumbbells, arm weights and a kettlebell.

Abraid2 · 03/05/2020 10:52

LES MILLS GRIT 26 Cardio
Duration: 30 mins
Equipment: none required

Gwenhwyfar · 03/05/2020 10:54

Oh great, thanks Abraid.
Even for Body Attack you need a mat. I think I might improvise with a cushion under my knees or something. My living room isn't carpeted.
