Pain when running

I've been wanting to get fitter for a while now (I've put weight on in the last couple of years since I started working from home and don't have the walk to work etc) and so decided to start jogging as it will also be a good way to get some fresh air as well. I have never really done any running before (at least not since school) other than the occasional run for the bus or something.

I bought some running shoes online and these arrived on Sunday so DP and I went out for a short jog just to make sure they were comfortable etc. I wasn't pushing myself particularly hard and was going slowly.

After about 10 minutes, my back started to ache. I probably should have stopped at that point but continued for a few minutes and then had a pain in the side of my left thigh as well. I stopped jogging and walked the rest of the way and the pain went away.

I couldn't go out on Monday due to work but went out yesterday and within a couple of minutes, I had back ache and almost simultaneously, the same pain in the side of my left thigh. I stopped jogging and walked the rest of the way, though the pain lasted a little longer this time.

Any idea what it could be? I am a bit heavier than I really ought to be so wondered if maybe it's just because of that, plus the fact it's an exercise I'm not used to doing so a different type of impact than my usual type of exercise but it did worry me as it was happening quite quickly. I don't want to continue if it's going to cause more problems but I was really looking forward to building up my runs and getting fitter so don't really want to stop completely if it's something that is going to ease up.

Anyone had similar or know what it could be?

You have (probably) tried to do too much too soon.

I suggest you don't run for the rest of this week, and then start again next week with C25K - which starts with brisk walking and repeats of 90 seconds of running (as slowly as you like). Then you can gently build your running stamina.

But one sided pain is something that needs attention. Have you any old spine/back/hip/knee/ankle/foot issues? Do you do any strength/flexibility stuff like Pilates or yoga and if so, do you have greater limitations on one side than the oth?

I did wonder if it was just trying too much too soon but thought I'd be okay as I was going slow and not for too long. I will have a look at the C25K.

I have no old injuries. I've only ever done odd bits of yoga and not for ages but my normal exercise routine involves strength (I normally do a 30 - 45 minute HIIT workout in the morning so a mix of strength and cardio) and have no problem with that and, as far as I can tell, have no greater limitations on one side.
