Trapped nerve - no running for me for a while * first world problem obviously *

I woke at 4.30 this am with what I think is a trapped nerve in my neck. It hurts (but isn't impossible) to move neck up and down and a bit worse left and right. Left top shoulder aches a bit but no other discomfort. No idea how I did it. Pain first thing was that bad I was almost sick then almost passed out. God I'm pathetic!

Anyway feeling sorry for myself as I'll have to give running and other exercise a miss for a few days - annoyingly I'd eaten like a pig last few days as I'd assumed I'd be doing my weekly "big" run tomorrow Confused

Using alternative heat/ice packs, painkillers. It's eased slightly since first thing.
Anyone know if it is likely to ease and get better by itself? I realise this is the most minor thing right now but I'm feeling sorry for myself and worrying about how I'm going to sleep tonight if it still feels like this.

To add insult to literall injury I've just seen a runner blaze past my house Grin

Do you have a tennis ball or a cricket ball lying around the house? Gently lie on your back with your shoulder on the ball and move around slowly until you find a tight/sore spot, then count to 30 until the spasm hopefully releases. You can rock gently over the ball if that helps.

YouTube will have a million videos on trigger point release if you want to know more.

DO NOT use the ball on your neck. It’s perfectly safe on your back, chest, legs etc, but not your neck.

Hi jcurve Smile Things have eased a bit since yesterday morning and I've got greater range of movement in my neck although still a way to go. God, I stink of Deep Heat though.

I think we do have a tennis ball in the shed so I'll try your suggestion ... does it actually release the trapped nerve?

Thanks for replying.

Hi tellme, glad to feel you are feeling somewhat better. Quite often with neck pain the cause is elsewhere (often tight shoulders), so by loosening any tight spots, you might potentially find you get relief. It’s worth a try given the situation.

That makes sense. Thank you 😊
