Running and sore hips

Any advice? I run sporadically. I ran a 14 km race (slowly) and last ran a park run about a month ago. All with no injuries or problems.

I went out for the first time in a month yesterday for a 10 km walk/run and my left hip is really sore. I think I have pulled my hip flexor.

I am 45. Do your hips get worse with age. Do stretched help?

Thanks

No answers for you OP just to say I went for a (much shorter) run on Tuesday and my right hip is so sore since!
I also didn't do any stretches/warm ups /cool downs and I was thinking that could be why..
its annoying as I really enjoyed the run and now I'm too sore to run again
I'm 42...
Hope you get some good advice soon .

I think you answered your own question when you said it was your first run in a month and you covered 10km! How fast were you going?

Hi Thinking I'm 55, I run regularly and I'm no stranger to sore hips. I know if I've been overdoing it, especially on hills, I'm going to feel it.

It may be age related - I didn't use to get it - but if it gets sore, I ease off for a bit, then ease back in, and meanwhile I work on my glute strength because that's a key to being able to run without injury. Things like Pilates and Barre are amazing for building strong glutes, even better if you use bands.

Yes to dynamic warm-ups, especially if you're going out in the morning when your muscles are cold. I think the jury's out on whether post-run stretches are any good for reducing injury, but I like doing them. The thing I find really helps if you're sore though, is foam rolling, or if you can get it, a good sports massage. Sadly probably not an option just now unless you live with a physical therapist :(

I've not been able to run since 5th January and am only slowly getting back to it now with the same problem. Was officially diagnosed with a lazy arse which made me laugh. Glute strength is what has made the difference for me, well...that and a lot of deep tissue massage (ouch) and v expensive but valuable sports physiotherapy (ouch) Barre classes and pilates also helped

Yoga helps me. Adriene has a few runner based videos as well as hundreds of others of benefit.

It's better to run little and often than sporadically.

You do need to stretch! After a run. And warm up properly - glute bridges and squats are awesome for strengthening glutes, which will help with hips.

What sort of pain though? right in the joint, or in your hip flexor or psoas?
