After-exercise aches

I normally go to 3+ yoga classes a week, 2 ashtanga so quite strong practice. I've thought for some time that I ought to do something more cardio but never done anything about it. One of the things stopping me was my lack of coordination.

Since lockdown my gym started doing online classes and I decided this was an opportunity to try something more active without feeling self-conscious. I tried a Legs Bums and Tums class which was fast paced with loads of lunges and squats.

At the end of the class my legs were shaking and today I feel like my hips, glutes and quads have seized up. I would soak in a warm bath but I don't think I'd manage to get out unaided!

Any advice for relieving the stiffness and soreness?

Did you stretch out enough after exercising? It makes a massive difference imo.

Ah the infamous doms. I always get them after weighted exercises and bodyweight high volume squats if I haven’t done them for a while.

They will get better I promise! In non technical terms the muscle fibres you have torn need time to repair. Keep active; I find walking; warm baths: stretches and eating high protein food to help with recovery process all help

Keep moving - go for a walk. You'll feel much better for it.

DOMS - delayed onset muscle soreness.. as above just keep active, its much worse if you stay still and seize up. Google stretching exercises, walk around the house and they’ll gradually ease off. If you have a foam roller then that will really help too (if you can put up with the initial discomfort)

Thanks for the advice... The class cut off before the end but the instructor was specific in saying to be sure to do a cool down, now I realise why.

I think a good long walk is needed today.

DOMS! When I did my first session with my PT (before lockdown) I couldn’t walk up the stairs or sit on the loo the next day. Good god.

I bought a foam roller from Amazon which HURTS but it did ease up. Keep active, and hot baths do help. Ibuprofen if it’s really bad.

Foam roller - does the trick, but it hurts! - or a short recovery run. On days when my legs hurt, such as after a race or a brutal weights session, a gentle half hour jog sorts them out.
