Different exercise every day?

Itsmybirthdaytoday20 · 06/03/2020 08:55

Previously when I’ve attempted to get into some sort of exercise routine I’ve picked one thing - running or 30 day shred mainly and just done that every day or second day. I then quickly get bored and start dreading it and it doesn’t take long before I completely stop.

Obviously all exercise is a positive thing, I completely get that. But in terms of improving body shape is doing something different every day still effective?

I was thinking swimming one day, a big walk one day, a run, one day of 30 day shred and maybe a group PT session one day.

Would be interested in people’s thoughts on this or should I stick to alternating one or two things for best results?

Thanks!

Yes Of course it’s still effective, you’re working different muscles, so arguably more effectively

I do different exercises, so I do two days cardio in the gym, but I do a mix of treadmill, bike and elliptical, then the third day I do full body weights followed by a rowing session. The same shit every day gets dull and starts to loose it’s effectiveness unless you keep upping it.

It works for triathletes! One of my acquaintances runs, swims, cycles, kayaks and does a pilates session every week and she looks amazing.

I do 3 runs, 2 or 3 swims and a couple of bike sessions a week. My run sessions I am following a training plan on my Garmin which gives me a different run every time which mixes it up

I was just coming on to mention triathlon! Training for one soon gets you fit. Swim/bike/run twice a week.

Itsmybirthdaytoday20 · 06/03/2020 09:23

You’re all right!

There’s a gym local to me you can pay as you go so I could probably go in there and do a bike session too. How long would a workout on a bike be in the gym? If that’s all you were doing in that session.

Absolutely!

I also get bored so try to do a mix of PT, gym alone, spin, running & body combat

Runningonempty84 · 06/03/2020 11:07

Depends on how practical that is. In my case, the lack of practicality would mean I couldn't keep it up.

For example, the only way I can fit exercise in is during my commute and at lunchtimes, which means I'm pretty much limited to running, cycling and whatever gym classes fit with my lunch breaks. I know that if I tried to mix it up then I'd find the scheduling difficult.

But if it works practically for you then go for it - with the caveat that, while your overall health will improve, you won't necessarily get "better" at one specific thing.

Itsmybirthdaytoday20 · 06/03/2020 12:53

I am definitely not committed enough to do it on my lunch breaks! That’s impressive.

I suppose I’m worried that I might not get the same effects as I would from just doing the same thing all the time :(

I think anything you can stick to is the right thing for you. Some people like to do the Shred because they can switch off and not have to think about it (or get kit together or drive to the gym.) For others, the sameness of it is boring. But I have heard it's a good idea to have two or three different things each week, so you get to use different muscle groups. I would feel very cranky without a weekly yoga class and often do some of the stretches during the week, then mix that up with walks and rowing outside in the fresh air, and 5-20 minute you tube random videos to keep from getting bored, depending on how motivated I feel.

EmmaStone · 06/03/2020 16:54

I do a mix of things because I get bored otherwise. My PT also says the right mix should help support your other sports (so HIIT helps strengthen your muscles to make your running more effective, and yoga is good for stretching out your aching muscles etc). I also have got into a bit of a routine, so yoga one day, often with a friend (and bump into various other friends and acquaintances in class which is nice), solo run (although there are plenty of group runs, or runs with friends available, but I prefer to run alone at my own pace), circuits class (usually lift share with 1 or 2 friends), solo PT session fortnightly, then maybe a walk at the weekend with family or walking friends. I really like using exercise as a time to catch up with friends, killing 2 birds with 1 stone!!

You are right, you wouldn’t get the same results, you’d get better results.

Runningonempty84 · 06/03/2020 18:56

Not necessarily true. Depends what you mean re "results." But if you want to be a faster runner, you'd manage best on maybe 5 runs a week, with one day x training/strength and one day yoga.
Not one day running, one swimming, one step, one Shred, one weights, one cycling and one HIIT.

Better transferable fitness though, maybe. For example - I'm a half decent runner and cycle twice daily, but I couldn't do more than one pull up Blush

Itsmybirthdaytoday20 · 06/03/2020 22:12

I want to be THIN!!! Grin

Runningonempty84 · 07/03/2020 10:10

Running makes you thin - but only if you do lots of it!

Bluntness100 · 07/03/2020 12:14

And cycling, cyclists are always really skinny,,,😂

megletthesecond · 07/03/2020 12:19

Yes. You'll get proper fit by mixing it up.

dementedpixie · 07/03/2020 12:21

I do a mix of classes e.g.
Monday - combat and balance
Tuesday - pump and pilates
Wednesday - nothing
Thursday- pump
Friday - pump and attack

nbee84 · 07/03/2020 12:41

I mix things up week by week depending on what I feel like doing. This week I've done pump x2, combat x2, attack, blaze, circuit training, an abs class and 4 treadmill sessions varying between 2.5k and 4k - a pretty energetic week!

I think what you need to do depends on your goals. If you were training for a full/half marathon there'd be a lot more running in there. If you were trying to increase your strength there'd be less cardio. For me I just like feeling fit, strong and healthy so mix it up all the time.

SophieLion · 08/03/2020 14:15

I also like to do a variety of different exercise each week as I get bored easily. Plus I think each type of exercise brings a different benefit to the body.

My goal is to do a couple of times running, couple of yoga and a couple of Jillian Michaels' HIIT workouts. Also like to do a bit of pilates after running.

Right now it's working for me but there's still some sessions that I look forward to more than others!!
