Exhausted after exercising

Does anyone get exhausted after exercise? I’m fit-ish, I run 3-4 times a week usually 5k with a longer run at the weekend. I did a 10K this morning and I feel like I’ve the worst hangover ever. I’m shattered with a banging headache, and I’ve felt like this all day. Does anyone else get thus?

You're much fitter than me. I'm just getting back into exercise but it sounds like dehydration to me. I suck at running so no nutrition recommendations but I'm sure someone on here does.

I often feel exhausted and get headaches after exercise and I'm at the gym twice a week and run 4 times a week. I've done this for years and am in my 50's, always tired, I drink and lots though so it's not dehydration.

Sorry, I just sort of accept that is how I'm going to feel afterwards which isn't much help I appreciate!

get your ferritin/iron levels checked 🌺

Waiting1987 · 29/02/2020 18:53

Yes if I run over 8 miles I usually feel rubbish for a few hours.

Iron and dehydration, you may also have a little cold coming on: I feel exactly as you describe and then the next day it usually makes itself known.

thickwoollytights · 29/02/2020 18:57

I'd agree about ferritin - and fluids

Standinguptononsense · 29/02/2020 18:59

Sounds like dehydration to me. Make sure drinking enough in the hours leading up to a run x

I think this is to do with dehydration but water alone won't fix it. I used to drink something like Powerade and would feel much better. Helped me after lots of exercise/sweat loss, a tummy bug, morning sickness or a hangover. Couldn't tell you what it was in it.

Yes! I think it must be dehydration. I’ve not had much water in the last couple of days for some reason. I always drink a sports drink after a long run but today I’ve not drunk anything else 🤦‍♀️

My iron is low but I’ve been taking Spatone lately- I probably need to have another blood test soon. I’m on medication for my thyroid so I think my thyroid levels are ok.

I’m the same, I run and exercise most days so consider myself to be fit. I sweat a lot and don’t drink when I’m running. I quite often feel ill, not immediately after but a few hours later. I’m guessing the same as others with iron or dehydration but otherwise no advice but you’re not alone!

Bluntness100 · 02/03/2020 21:44

This is dehydration. Have two or three pints of water with a couple of teaspoons of salt in, you also need to replace the salts you’ve lost.

Then have a good nights kip and keep hydrating tomorrow , ensuring you replace the salts you loose, then when you run again make sure you stay properly hydrated, eating properly to replace the salts naturally.

You’ll be fine. But you should be careful here and not let yourself get like this.

Dehydration!

You need water, not just during or after but in the hours before a run. Think of it this way - during a long run you are using up a lot of your water stores in perspiration, vapour, spittle etc. Your blood thickens, which makes it harder work for your cardiovascular system to get your blood moving around your body to meet the demands of your exercise. I know that's a simplified explanation! So hydrate, replenish and also give your body some energy with a gel if you're out on a long run. Don't push it to run on empty because you'll get injured and find recovery takes longer.

In short - enjoy your running but don't run on empty!

Did you see your GP ? 🌺

Spodge · 04/03/2020 17:19

I don't get exhausted after exercise, and I exercise hard for an hour pretty much every day. The exercise energises me - although if I am coming down with a cold then I might find myself needing an afternoon nap.
