What stops you from going to the gym?

Hi

I'm in the process of setting up a personal training business,
What I'd like to do is work with the people who would like to exercise more but feel unable to do so due to various issues, disability, body confidence etc etc

So, I'd like to ask all of you,
If you'd like to go to a gym, but never do, besides the money/lack of time, what stood you from going or makes you feel uncomfortable!

Thanks

Cold and wet winter weather.
Tiredness in the evening
"Getting started".

Notthebloodygym · 26/02/2020 00:11

Actually I'm your key demographic as I sort of want to.

Another reason is high cost and also it sounds like bloody hard work. I currently do 15 minutes at home and that's hard enough.

GothamProtector · 26/02/2020 00:13

Childcare.

Jason118 · 26/02/2020 00:14

Gym activity is too boring

dustibooks · 26/02/2020 00:15

Judging from the one and only time I have ever been anywhere near a gym - the smell.

crosser62 · 26/02/2020 00:18

Cost. It’s very expensive.

The botox, false eyelashes, new boob brigade in expensive gym wear. Vile.

I’m fat, ashamed, embarrassed and don’t like feeling sweaty.

Smug trainers with smug trainer talk. I’ve no idea what you are talking about. Speak to me like a normal person and not someone who knows what muscles you are naming. You make me feel thick as well as fat.

PelicanPie · 26/02/2020 00:19

It’s incredibly boring. I hate machines and MTV.

breatheinskipthegym · 26/02/2020 00:32

Another for “Just getting started”
Childcare for baby
Loud music
The PT-type promises gyms make, when the actual experience is very hands-off, a pain in the neck to organise, hard to get appointments, irregular etc. Actual PT is too expensive - is there some sort of balance to strike where you get enough attention, but less than a PT would give
Timing of classes to fit around school-age children in the evening - a crèche plus lots of daytime classes would be holy grail for me
Cliques/not knowing gym etiquette and feeling as though I stand out for being a noob.

CalleighDoodle · 26/02/2020 00:33

Its cold and dark when I finish work.
I can’t justify the expense.
Netflix.

123rd · 26/02/2020 00:59

The gyms you are talking about seem v different to the one(s) I go to.
All a very mixed bunch of people. Mine is £16.00 roughly a month
The reasons I find I can come up with for not going is... class timetable doesn't quite fit. Car parking can be a hassle. And if I'm not accountable to anyone I'm far more likely to wimp out so I always arrange to meet a pal there.

allfurcoatnoknickers · 26/02/2020 01:08

I'm a gym convert, but before I was:
No idea how to use the equipment
No idea where to start with exercising
Gym imposter syndrome/intimidated by the whole gym environment
I also get no pleasure or enjoyment from exercise (still don't) and don't feel better afterwards, just tired and grouchy

WomanIsTaken · 26/02/2020 01:11

I love love love the gym, but gave up my membership on account of difficulty finding childcare and time.

CtrlU · 26/02/2020 01:14

I just don’t want to go. I’ve only been to a gym once and that was to use the pool and sauna Grin

GiveHerHellFromUs · 26/02/2020 01:18

There's not one close enough to home, childcare, motivation to actually go to the gym.

EBearhug · 26/02/2020 01:36

I prefer swimming and aquafit and do a yoga class outside of a gym.
If I were to use a gym, I would probably use the subsidised one at work, but I won't do that this side of dickhead former manager retiring.

PrimeroseHillAnnie · 26/02/2020 01:52

Cost and time.

Yogafairy · 26/02/2020 02:33

The groups of men that take over the free weights section, the groups that take up machines just chatting and taking selfies. I have complained multiple times at my gym for the staff to encourage people to move along when not using machines but they won't. The only thing that I can guarantee I will be able to use at my gym is the running machine.

AgnesNaismith · 26/02/2020 03:10

People & anxiety.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 26/02/2020 03:35

The dreadful.music.

TheKrakening3 · 26/02/2020 03:40

I have just started going to PT 3 mornings a week. I can do it because my youngest has started school and I am a SAHM this year.

Also, due to the above reasons, I can do it straight after school drop off which leaves my day clear. I have never been able to sustain an exercise program (even pre-kids) if I can’t do it first thing in the day. I would feel miserable all day with it looming at the end and soon would quit.

Chottie · 26/02/2020 03:46

The intimidating groups of men around the free weights section, hefting up dumb bells and then thumping them down making the floor shudder. And the sweat / smell in that part of the gym.

It doesn't feel welcoming
Also not knowing how to use the machines
Not being able to put an exercise plan together which would not bore me
The endless sports channels on the TVs

CMOTDibbler · 26/02/2020 03:48

I'm active (swim, run, bike) and would quite like to use a personal trainer to give me more focus, do body conditioning stuff, and help set/achieve targets. However, I have a disability, and no one locally has any experience of training someone, or setting a programme which is suitable (both in terms of what I can do, but also taking into account the body issues caused by my disability)

Dhalandchips · 26/02/2020 03:52

The bloody awful noisy music. And currently an injury.

PhoneLock · 26/02/2020 07:32

Lack of spare time. If I had more, I'd go more often.

It's at the opposite end of the scale to the fake boobs, Botox, sauna and selfie establishments though. We are lucky if they get all the cows out before it opens in the morning.

dudsville · 26/02/2020 07:34

Well, I'm not your target as I'll never go to the gym again but for me, back in the day, it was cost and being tied into a contract.
