Is there an app or site that helps you plan a route in this way?

I'm about to go out for a mid-length run and was having a look at a map to decide roughly which way to go.

And thought it would have been terribly useful if I had been able to draw a line along where I thought I'd like to go, and then be told by the map/app how long that line is.

Does that exist? Or do I need to persuade the DC to invent it for me?

Google My Maps. (Very similar to Google maps, but not the same)

Map my walk

I use plotaroute.com to plan, it does the job.

However, I use strava to record, and vaguely think the strava desktop website has this functionality and since I’m using the bloody app to record my data I should look into this! But time is short so I end up using what I always use... 🙈

Mapmyrun does this

You can also do this on Strava, but I'm not sure if this function is available on the phone app - I always use my laptop to map routes.

Don't know how to add a picture, but I've got a free app called map ruler. Does exactly what you describe. Allows me to plan a route for a particular distance and work out the distance for a favourite route.

If you download the ordnance survey app (free) you can buy map squares for your area (or anywhere) for less than a pound
You can plan routes and plot routes as you do them
It shows roads and public footpaths (like an actual map!)
I love it for dog walks when you're not sure if you are actually on the footpath in the field, it shows exactly where you are!

I use Strava to plot routes mostly. You need the desktop site to do that.

I also export the gpx file from Strava and upload to the OS maps app (paid for, £20 per year) so I can follow the track on that during the run if I need to. You can't use Strava that way unfortunately although you can see the route on the app.

Try gb.mapometer.com

HowManyNameChangesNow · 23/02/2020 17:55

OnTheGoMaps is free and very easy and quick to use. Once you have drawn a rough route you can drag points around to lengthen or. Shorten.
It will also do 'as the crow flies' or plot itself along existing roads and footpaths.

Mapometer.

I don't need to use it so often now as I have a good repertoire of routes to play with. But it was very handy in my early days of running.

LuckyLickitung · 23/02/2020 18:50

Actually I think mapometer is now mapmyrun...

Thank you all so much!

I have plenty to look in to, and it all sounds so promising

I love plotaroute. It's a free website. Works on phones as well as it does on computers/tablets. Includes off road paths etc. Includes ascent etc as well distance. I use it all the time when planning longer runs.
