How old are you and how often do you exercise?
When do you exercise and how do you fit it into your days?
I need motivation!

I'm 45 and don't exercise...

In my 50s. Swim every other day and walk lots. I have significant back problems so swimming is best. Luckily I like swimming and how it makes me feel afterwards.

My advice is do something that is fun for you. Try something different e.g. roller skating.

ThinkPinkStink · 14/02/2020 23:55

I'm 40. I go spinning twice or three times a week. Usually two evenings and one weekend morning.

I feel SO much better for it - until June 2019 I hadn't don't any exercise for 10 years.

EmmiJay · 14/02/2020 23:58

35 next week and I lift weights 3/4 times a week for 30-45mins. Usually do it in the evenings after DD has gone to bed or after the school run.

NotTired · 14/02/2020 23:59

I'm 28. Yoga most days. No class just videos on youtube. As someone who's always hated exercising but I really enjoy yoga. Then a nice long walk with a steep incline and toddler on my back most weekends. Along with usual chasing after toddler, walk to park, town ect.

OhWellThatsJustGreat · 14/02/2020 23:59

Between 4 and 5 days a week.
Weight train 3/4 days, run 1.

DH and I go after work:
Mon, Tues, Thurs and Fri. My parents look after ds and dog.
Saturdays in laws have the boys.

I have no motivation, I hate going there, but once we're there I'm ok and train hard. But I would still rather read.

I’m 41, I do a boot camp in the park once a week and the 2-3 times a week I cycle to the station for work and swim before work. If I get time I’ll do a hiit session at home and on the weekend we walk a lot and swim with the boys for a couple of hours.

YappityYapYap · 15/02/2020 00:18

I notice all the women here that exercise are older than I am. I'm 30 and have no excuse that I don't do any exercise. I actually look around me and see that most women in their late 30's/40's and 50's are much fitter and healthier than I am. My mum that has MS and is in her 50's is slimmer and does more exercise than I do. I should be ashamed!

Can I ask, anyone that is now 40-60, did you have little energy for exercise in your 20's and 30's and now feel you have more energy or do you just do it because you know you should?

YappityYapYap · 15/02/2020 00:26

NSFW, hang on in there. My mum was in the same situation as you when first diagnosed. She couldn't do much and wiped out constantly. When first diagnosed, there was little treatment and help but with the right doctor, he helped her a lot by getting her on the right medication and getting her the right physical therapies. It's a tough thing to balance, it takes a lot of tooing and froing with things but 8 years on, my mum has finally found the right balance of things and of course still struggles but seems to be able to maximise her energy levels and abilities by sticking to the right medications and physical therapies.

I hope you manage to achieve similar. Such a horrible illness to have. Some good days and a lot of bad days. I'm suspected of having it too after getting a diagnosis of hemiplegic migraines based on symptoms and my mum having been diagnosed with that before her MS diagnosis. I'm getting an MRI soon and scared. I really hope it's just suspicions

Am 59 and gym 3 times a week, do my own thing when I’m there, not classes, love the endorphins and it’s nature’s anti-depressant, have had a really stupid binge-eating day today, disappointed in myself, but hopefully gym in morning will help

TippledPink · 15/02/2020 00:28

I am 34- netball once a week, body combat twice a week, gym session twice a week (mostly cardio these days). Walk the dog every day.
I work part time so fit it in on my days off, or the one evening the kids are at their Dads. If I worked full time it would be a lot more difficult as I can't be bothered on my working days!

damekindness · 15/02/2020 00:28

When I was in my 20s I walked a lot because I couldn't drive and had to get kids to places and did the odd sit up, in my 30s and 40s used to exercise (weights) and run a bit for reasons of vanity. In my 50s its all Pilates/yoga/swimming to keep me functioning, keep my back from seizing up and to distract me from mortality

WingingWonder · 15/02/2020 00:31

My biggest challenge is time so I’m now making rigid changes
Monday- PT weights session followed by cardio class
Weds - yoga 90min
Friday HIIT & swim
Weekend, running about with kids.
If I didn’t do all this I would only do about 6k steps a day. In contrast at weekend about 12k!

Redland12 · 15/02/2020 01:12

I’m 61 and I walk 5k a day, then when I get home I do a workout with dumbbells for arms and back. 7 days a week.

TheOrigBrave · 15/02/2020 02:28

@YappityYapYap I'm 49 and find I have more time as my DSs are older (youngest is 10), and I work from home so am saving time not commuting.

Also I have leant to manage my time better eg if I don't do sport in the available window then I know I'll feel crap.

PenguinsOnParade · 15/02/2020 02:59

Late 30s and I do two hour-long classes a day (a mixture of yoga/pilates/pole fitness) every Tuesday to Friday. I walk everywhere too and sometimes add some yoga or pilates at home when I'm not busy.

EnormousDormouse · 15/02/2020 03:03

5 days a week
A mix of Pump/Combat/Attack classes plus bits of HIIT, circuits and yoga (2 nights I do back to back classes so that I can get a good range in)
I'm 48 and am the fittest and strongest I have ever been.
I live on my own and only live 5 mins drive from the gym so fitting it in is purely a matter of my own motivation.

autumnleaves15 · 15/02/2020 08:06

I'm 29 and no kids so plenty of free time in the evenings I suppose.

Monday - kettlebells class
Tuesday - PT session
Wednesday - circuits/weights class
Thursday - circuits/weights class followed by some additional weights
Friday - rest
Saturday - gym to repeat the PT session alone
Sunday - rest

On my rest days I'll maybe walk 3-4 miles or will go for a gentle 30 minute swim. I also walk to the gym and back (1 mile total) if it's not ridiculous weather. I also try to walk 15 minutes during my lunch break if it's dry. Have been doing this for 2 and a bit months now and have never felt so good.

Motivation: I want to be fit and healthy. I also want to look good. I live less than 5 min drive from the gym too so it's not a hassle to go.

insancerre · 15/02/2020 08:10

Early 50s
I don’t do exercise and I never have
But, I don’t drive so I walk to and from work and I have a busy active job in a nursery, I do housework and gardening
I don’t feel the need to do any extra, I’m fit and healthy and not overweight

Waitingfordennis · 15/02/2020 08:16

yappity I had horses throughout my 30's -.40's, now a keen runner in my 50's. I'm lucky I don't work but did have a young family so harder before, i.just love the feeling exercise gives me so a great motivation.

EddieVeddersfoxymop · 15/02/2020 08:16

Yoga for 30 mins daily. 5 times a week add cardio.....a brisk walk or a cycle. Daily strength with a resistance band for 10 mins. I cannot deny the good effect this has on my mental and physical health. Not doing it for weight loss but my body has changed and toned, I'm fitter and more flexible.

Parker231 · 15/02/2020 08:19

Am 46 - do two PT sessions a week and one class. DH and I go for a run every Sunday. Have followed same routine for about 18 years. Find that regular exercise keeps me mentally and physically strong.

Runningonempty84 · 15/02/2020 08:32

I'm 35.

I run 4-5 times a week, totalling 50ish miles at the moment (marathon training)

Cycle to work 5 days a week.

Gym one day, swimming one day.

I should do more strength work but struggle to find the time with two small DC.

Walkacrossthesand · 15/02/2020 08:34

@yappityyapyap, I'm 60. Exercised a lot when in 20s (pre DC), nothing in 30s (became single parent), began to pick it up again in 40s, trying hard to keep active in 50s against background of low level joint issues. I'm now so conscious of the huge variation in activity levels & mobility in 70s and 80s, and (big mobility limiting diagnoses aside) it seems to be down to keeping those quads and back strong. As you get older, if you do cardiovascular exercise, then everyday activities are easy - if you don't, they're the most you can manage. Sobering.

Blondie1092 · 15/02/2020 09:39

I'm 27 and I run on a Monday, Netball on a Tuesday and I weight train/high intensity (CF) Wed, Thurs, Fri and Sat.
If I can't get a workout in I usually go for a walk or do home yoga! It's good for the soul!
My mum is 55 and she goes to Pilates, walks and goes swimming once a week.
Walking is massive underrated in my opinion!

HuckfromScandal · 15/02/2020 10:34

46
Try to run 20 miles a week
Normally broken into 4 runs, 2 in the evening and both weekend days.
Yoga 4 times a week, 7.30am class.

It keeps me sane.
