Half marathon

I'm on week 1 of C25k. Running isn't something I've done in about 20years but I walk 5 or 6 miles a day.

I've tentatively agreed to a half marathon in Sept. Is 8 months a reasonable time to train or am I delerious?

Plenty of time to train! Good luck!

Thank you for your reply @youngatheart. Delighted to hear this.

Christ I did absolutely sedentary couch fat potato to a half in 6 weeks. You could do an ultra marathon in 8 months!

Forestcantrun · 24/01/2020 20:55

Hahahahaha you've not seen me run! I run in the pitch dark only so even the thought of day time running is distressing 😂
Did you use any particular training app or guide or did you just go for it??

Na I just put on some trainers and ran. And didn't stop. I'm doing about 3 runs a week, a 3 mile, a 5 mile, and then about a 10-14 mile. I'm 3 months in and am going to try for 16 miles next weekend

Absolutely do-able. Just make sure you're doing strength exercises alongside the running to prevent injury.

Most running apps have training programmes for 10k/halfs/marathons etc. I never used them though and just slowly built up my distance over time. And every now and then I would stick with a particular distance and try and improve my speed. Also add some uphill routes too. Which half are you doing? I did Leeds and it was half uphill and half downhill. Manchester is quite flat and a lot of people get a pb on that route.

Forestcantrun · 24/01/2020 21:55

Thank you all, it's very encouraging. I do pilates and weights a few times a week so I'm hopeful all my activities will compliment the others.
I might ditch C25k when I get to the 5k and build on it myself.
Belfast half @mrsL. Apparently its a nice one... Or so I've been assured 😂

@NotYourHolidayDick you sound like a running machine. Am impressed!

Very doable. Just try not to up your mileage too quickly, as that way injury lies! Increasing by 10% a week, with a recovery week every 4 weeks where you step down, is ideal.

ShinyGiratina · 25/01/2020 11:13

Build it up in stages. C25k, 10k. Once 10k is comfortable the extra milage is pretty easy to build.

Some cross training such as strength/ yoga/ swimming is good for preventing injury and there are no rules stating that you have to run every step of the way. Walking is a good foundation to begin with.

SquishySquirmy · 25/01/2020 14:02

Sounds fine, why not look for some half marathon training plans (10 week or 12 week ones), so you know what to aim for once you finish c25k? Don't start the plan yet, but see what it recommends as a starting point (Eg, being able to run 5 miles comfortably). When you finish c25k you will be able to run for 30 minutes. So you know that between then and sometime in June/July you have to increase that time to running for around an hour. Then start the HM training plan.
Perfectly possible, but keep it steady - don't do too much too soon, or stop running for several months.

Forestcantrun · 25/01/2020 14:30

Thanks very much. I'm going to aim for a 5mile race at the end of June. I figure once I get to 8km I can do 10km, and once I hit 10, its just a matter of keeping going.

Or so I keep telling myself 😂
