Is this enough exercise?

I run twice a week (only about a mile each time) and 1 PT session a week.

I'm 50 and 9.5stone, 5 foot 5 in heights.

I feel great and am eating healthily.

Turning 50 last year got me thinking about being healthier and fitter.

Am I doing enough?

OP, I would check what you do against the NHS exercise guidelines - they are very clear and simple.

www.nhs.uk/live-well/exercise/

Enough for what? NHS says 150 minutes of moderate exercise a week so you're probably not doing that at the moment unless you do a lot of walking but personally I don't consider walking to be moderate exercise, it's low intensity for me.
Try building up your running or do run / walk intervals to go further than a mile.

BaconAndAvocado · 17/01/2020 17:16

150 minutes?!

I would say I'm doing 100 at the moment.

Enough for what?

To consider myself fit and healthy I guess.

Scrap that, I'm doing fine as the exercise I'm doing (accord to the NHS) is classed as vigorous and I need to be doing 75 minutes a week of this.

👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

Sounds alright to me, unless you are very sedentary all the rest of the week?

BaconAndAvocado · 17/01/2020 17:20

Thanks Msmartini that's made my day ☺️

I would consider that on the low side but this sort of thing is very personal. The only thing I would say is to make sure you are doing some sort of weights/resistance training - but I expect the PT session covers that.

MsMartini · 17/01/2020 17:59

I aim to please Grin.

Just check the strength requirements as well!

MoonahStone · 17/01/2020 18:02

How did you make the 100 minutes up from the exercise you listed OP. 1 mile of running depending on your speed is probably only 10-15minutes and in the PT session are you active for the whole time? I'd say you need a bit more to reach those NHS guidelines but great start.

BaconAndAvocado · 17/01/2020 18:30

Moonah

Yes, my PT session is full on HIT and weights etc. I run for 20 minutes, I was just estimating that's about a mile, maybe it's more.

I would like to eventually increase my running time but, for now, it's enough for me.

That website is really good, just found a free Couch to 5 K app!

My PT wants me to work towards doing a 5K but I'm not so sure!

Sounds on the low side to me, but horses for courses and all that. You're a healthy weight and feel good, so that's all positive. If you can run for 20 minutes already then you're more than able to train for and run 5k, probably within a few weeks .

I'd also check how far you're running. You say you're running with "vigorous" effort for 20 minutes, so that should cover significantly more than a mile...

BaconAndAvocado · 18/01/2020 10:40

Thanks all.

Am currently in bed with yet another bug so I won't be running anywhere for some time.....

CalmConfident · 18/01/2020 18:43

5k you say....obviously you need parkrun in your week :)

BaconAndAvocado · 19/01/2020 18:56

Oh yeah, Park run. The kids did one a couple of years.

OP posts:
Rastamousehat · 19/01/2020 18:59

I would estimate youre probably running more than a mile in 20 min....and would def recommend parkrun - youdint have to run all (or any!) Of it!
