Running spikes

Hubby has hinted at wanting some running spikes for xmas, he has joined a running club and they run on the track once a week. Now I wasn't sure if he was joking or not (he said it whilst laughing due to the fact I've just bought him running trainers and trail trainers in the last couple of months) so my question is....would running spikes be suitable for this? And what kind? I've read some are just for sprinting 100m etc. I think this would be a combination of sprinting exercises and longer runs round the track, training lasts for 1hr-1hr 30 mins. TIA x

The shoe is much the same, you get different traction for different surfaces/distances by changing the length and/or shape of the spikes (and deciding which the in which hole)

No matter how careful you think he'll be, you need to think of the actual spikes as disposable items because the dratted things get dropped/lost. So get the shoes, a decent selection of the actual spikes.

Can't really recommend which ones/layout as we've only ever used them for mud.

Give him Vaseline as well - helps keep the threads on the spikes sweet (though as he's track not trail, then dealing with dried mud mightnot loom so large in his life)

You don't really need spikes for track IMO. Not unless he's very good, and very serious! But if he is, Decathlon ones are decent, and v affordable

Outedsochanged · 06/12/2019 20:58

For track work you want 6mm long spikes. For cross country probably 12-15,mm. Decathlon spikes have are a slight different shape to others, so make sure you have the right key to put them in with.
Sprinters need spikes for 'down' starts

I did athletics relatively seriously for many years in my younger days. We only wore spikes for actual competition, very rarely for training. General rule of thumb was that spikes were only changed between the track and field and cross country seasons (mostly on the morning of the first race of the season to much swearing). Track spikes are the short ones so as not to tear up the track (assuming it’s a tartan track). If it’s gravel, he might want to see what others are finding best.

We all wore spikes but we were competing at national level (well and all levels up to that)

Thank you for the replies, I think to be on the safe side I'm going to have to ask him if it's something he would seriously like as he's never mentioned it since!
