What Exercise at home...low motivation

Lone parent, not able to get to the gym or go out running.
Need to lose at least 2 stone, what home exercises do you recommend?

I tried 30 day shred a few years ago but it ruined my knees and I suffered with plantar fasciitis afterwards for a while (don’t know if this was linked or not)

My biggest issue is finding the motivation to actually start anything, or I do 2 days, Miss a day for whatever reason and don’t get back to it.
Always lots of other jobs to do around the house too.
I need a giant kick up the bum!!

I like fitness blender workouts - they have their own website or there’s loads on YouTube.

Joe Wicks lean in 15 workouts are good and nice and quick.

A lot of people rate yoga with Adrienne if you wanted something more low impact.

Diet is way more important for weight loss than exercise.

But exercise is terrifically good for you for so many other reasons (toning up, mental health etc)

Has there ever been a form of exercise you've enjoyed?

TinyTickler · 24/11/2019 18:46

The Body Coach hiit workouts. Quick and effective.

Can you get out for a walk? I think people over think starting exercise and set themselves up to fail. Get out for a brisk walk every day, do some squats/star jumps/lunges every time the kettle boils or you have 30s while your waiting for something and get in to some good easy habits to start off with.

No advice sorry as I find it impossible to exercise at home ... I always am thinking that there's something that needs doing, and have even paused Davina to put a load of washing on !
What about including your children on some outdoor exercise ?
How old are they ?
Maybe fast walking, whilst they are on scooters?
If you manage your diet and daily physical exercise, you should start to notice a difference and then you will be motivated to keep going.
Good luck x

I'm in the same boat pretty much. Luckily I do get out for a surf or skate when husband is home...however I cant rely on that exercise alone now the dark winter months are here.

I got a cheap second hand exercise bike that folds up in the kitchen. I do 5k in the morning whilst my toddler has breakfast and that takes just over 10min. Then I do another round of however far I can go in 10 mins.

If you check facebook marketplace, ebay, schpok, gumtree your bound to find one.

Thanks everyone
Youngest DC is 3 and walks very slow but we do walk back and forth to school everyday.
I used to enjoy spin and exercise classes like Zumba, body pump, I think the group was very good for motivating me to push myself a bit more.
Will look on selling sites for a bike/cross trainer & look at the different videos mentioned Smile

I get the part about getting into good habits too but do short bursts of exercise actually work? I always thought I needed to do something more substantial (20mins or so) to notice a difference

I thought if you do even like 3 minutes at a time, if it's a HIIT type workout then that still counts? I do 3 minute nitric oxide dump exercises off YouTube while I'm waiting for the kettle to boil = 3 mins HIIT x 3 times a day = 9 mins of cardio I would not have done otherwise. I'm no expert though, will wait for someone more knowledgeable to come along! Other ideas - stuff I've tried when my kids were that age - find a park with an outdoor gym workout area. Take a ball to any park and run round with kids (you'll have to run and pick up the ball A LOT!!) Indoor skipping rope. Kids kitchen disco. Find a class where they let you bring the kids (bouncercise did IIRC) Good luck!

Short bursts are better than nothing, and give you something to build upon. That’s the key - getting the habits in in the first place. I built up from no press ups to being able to do 20 simply by practicing for 2 mins each morning.

Honestly the health of the nation would be improved so much if everyone just did a 20 min walk every day and then a few bursts of activity at home.

Are you strong enough to give your 3 year old a piggy back? I prefer to carry mine so I can walk quicker sometimes.

It does sound like your motivation is quite high though so try and get a you tube workout into your schedule too - first thing in the morning is best.

But if you want to lose weight it’s 80% what you eat. Do exercise for health and the endorphins, don’t think if it as a weight loss aid. You can’t out train a bad diet unless you’re training for a mega event like a marathon.

Take a look at Body Project (teambodyproject.com), there are plans for all different levels. I’ve been doing their workouts for years and never get bored and I find it easier to keep going if I’m following a plan rather than just picking random workouts

KTD27 · 25/11/2019 07:38

I bought kettlebells from Argos and have massively upped my exercise by using them with YouTube kettlebell workouts. In particular I love Shona vertue. 20 mins and I feel brilliant. It’s more of a mental thing than a change my body thing. That’s coming from what I eat.

LetMeLayAmongTheStars · 25/11/2019 07:46

I do need to lose weight but also not in a great place mentally (because of the weight gain amongst other things) so I’m hoping it will help for both.
Thank you for the advice everyone, will start little and often and build up Smile
