Which gym classes for beginners?

I'm overweight and working on it. I've been a member of my gym for ages and only really use that and the pool.
I really want to try classes but don't want something too strenuous to start with, as I'll just feel totally out of my depth.
I love music so the dance ones interest me, but which one is ok for someone with no rythmn? Is Zumba an easy start? Sh'bam?
There is a easy yoga class which I'm going to give a go too.

Which others do you recommend?

If you want to start super easy - go with aqua aerobics. I personally love Zumba but it is a bit energetic (well in my gym it is).

Personally I quite liked body pump as well when starting out as although it’s a good workout it’s not so cardio heavy.

I've tried aqua aerobics and found it a little too easy. Didn't really feel like I'd had a work out.
I basically want something where I'm not going to look like a dick for not knowing what the hell I'm doing and trying to keep up

I'll 2nd giving body pump a go. When I joined the gym I started out with pilates. Their was a body pump class before it so I sometimes saw some of it if I was early and decided to give it a go as there was no jumping around. It's a great class as a beginner as you are in charge of the weights that you use so you can start off light - which is quite important to begin with as you need to be careful to watch and listen to the instructor to make sure you get the form right - in fact if you go to the Les Mills website you can watch videos to see how it's done.

I'd second Body Pump. You can go light on your weights for the first few weeks, and although the music helps, you don't have to bounce about too much.

I've just started op with the added complications of trying to avoid impact (ruptured achilles)

I've started off super easy with aqua yoga Pilates zumba... Aqua zumba I actually get alot out of because you can go as hard and as fast as you want. For example, the lower down in the water you hold yourself the bearded you work, also treading water the entire time if you're deep enough.

I've started doing weights as well.

So far not a twinge...

Body pump was the first class I tried 11 years ago and I still go to it and really enjoy it. Never started going to classes until I was in my 30s and now I go 4 days a week. I'm still fat and flabby but it gets me out the house!

Thanks all. Signed up for a body pump class and a FC cycle class as saw that whilst I was swimming this morning and it looked a level I would be ok with.

Get there a few minutes early for body pump as you need to set up a step (for lying on mostly) and to get a selection of weights and bar. Might be a chance to get tips from the instructor too

MogHog · 20/11/2019 20:58

Ok, thanks for the tip!

Body pump is good. Spinning is also good imo because you set the resistance level yourself. Circuits classes are fun and a mix of cardio and weights.
