Running in the rain.

Can anyone recommend a decent jacket for running in the rain.
I only do 5k runs so it doesn’t need to cope with marathons or climbing mountains.

I don't bother with a jacket for runs of less than 4/5 hours. Jackets that are properly waterproof get hot and sweaty if you're working hard - boil in the bag style - even if they're allegedly breathable.
And ones that aren't fully waterproof are no more use than a decent long-sleeved base layer, really.

I have a great Montane waterproof I bought for running but hardly ever wear, so I just wear it on the bike instead. OMM and Inov8 ones are decent too. But honestly, I'd only wear a jacket for a full day run in the fells.

It's pointless for a 30 min run IME. You're not going to stay dry, however much money you spend, so choosing a comfy and stretchy base layer works better.

I had a thin Ronhill one, maybe something like this, though difficult to tell from the website www.ronhill.com/womens-everyday-jacket

I did take it off sometimes once I’d warmed up, but definitely appreciated it to start off in.

I have the Ron Hill one linked above. OK for drizzle but like @Runningonempty84 says, nothing is fully waterproof and also breathable/ comfortable. For half an hour I’d just get wet & jump in the shower as soon as I got home!

Pointless, just get wet!

Nothing beats getting into the shower after a run in the rain. I don't have a jacket, just get wet!

I'm also in the 'don't bother' camp. They're never very waterproof, and properly waterproof ones aren't breathable.

I tend to wear closer fitting clothes in the rain - wet baggy gear is much more miserable than wet tight gear.

On the rare occasion I do go out in a jacket, I wear as little as possible underneath it (ie a running vest or tight-fit t shirt. The only thing worse than wet running clothes is 2 layers of wet running clothes.

There's something very liberating about running in the rain - once you've stepped foot out the door, it can be a very enjoyable experience (especially in the summer, but I guess we have to wait 6 months for that now...)

I would buy a cap to keep the rain out of your eyes though.

I have a ronhill light jacket - is neon also - but usually end up taking it off as too warm. And it’s not waterproof anyways

I like a fleecy neckbuff or something similar to keep my ears warm. If ears are warm I can handle cold rain (I find).

Yes, yes, yes to warm ears! I have mine covered from about Sept to June! But will wear shorts from March-Nov

I've got some cheap showerproof jackets/ tops from Decathlon. They keep you dry until you're warm and sweaty anyway at which point a wetting is refreshing. They also keep the wind off and slow the water soaking in so are more comfortable than just getting soaked.

A cap is a must have!
