5k to 10K and 12 gym classes a week?!

That title might seem alarming 😂 but just wanting some opinions.
I’ve been running plus some classes and doing IF and 1800 cals a day for a while, but I really want to up it now.

Has anyone done that many gym classes a week and survived? 😂

The classes are like body flex, Speedflex, body pump, body attack, spin aqua aerobics and yoga. They are 30 mins, 45 mins or an hour.

When I’m on shift, I’ll do zero or one class, but will swim, gym or run (only 30 mins). When not on shift, 2-4 classes. I also have a day of rest a week.

Running wise I run 4-5 times a week but it’s on an app and not long runs. I also walk a lot.

I’m around 2-3 stone overweight, but that’s not my primary reason for all the exercise. I’m finding it really good for my mental health and my (many) chronic conditions.

Any other advice to complement my 10K training appreciated, I have a 10K in September and a 10K in October. I can run a 5k atm.

Thanks x

I’ve been there and think it’s a bit obsessive and does easily lead to burn out and/or injuries.
What do you really want to achieve with your fitness? If it’s toning you’d be far more time effective doing proper weights than all those classes.
If you want to improve your running you’d be better increasing your runs and just chucking in maybe a bit of strength and some sort of stretchy classes.

Honestly, you are likely to either burn out, injure yourself or lose enthusiasm.

2-4 classes a day is too much imo.
On the days you do classes, I wouldn't run.

I would do a maximum of 1hr30min classes a day or 1 class and a run/swim.

You will get really tired and your athletic performance will be rubbish.

I get the intent - I have quite an obsessive personality and one year had to make it my new year's resolution to do LESS sport because I was just burning out and feeling like crap.

My best friend is a national triathlon champion and coach and through her I have learned that less is actually more and you get more out of your sessions if you are not overdoing it.

Thanks so much guys. I do have a bit of a all or nothing personality 😂.

I’m not yet confident to be in the weights section of the gym (other than for basic short exercises).

I think I’ve become a bit endorphin addicted and I’ve always been a really bad sufferer of DOMs.

For now, I might just try out all the classes, as there’s still a few I’ve not done. And see which I find best. Plus there will be some I don’t like.

1h30 classes or 1 class plus run is a really good idea.

I forgot to mention, I don’t particularly love swimming for too long so what I count as a swim is like 2 lengths then out. 😂

In regards to fitness goals I want to be sub 1 hour for 10K by Christmas and to comfortably run a 10K by September/October.

I do want to tone up, but I’m not bothered about rapid toning, as I have weight to lose via diet and nutrition as well.

Thanks again 🙂

How fast are you doing 5k now?
The difference between 5k and 10k isn't too great (in my opinion) but you will need to train to do a sub 1 hr.

Satterthwaite · 16/07/2019 14:49

You could try a kettlebell class if you prefer classes. It will also tone you and get you into shape for more weights. You start with really light bells like 2 or 4kg and can progress to heavier if you want.

Studentnursesos12e · 16/07/2019 14:50

@Nesssie

It varies because I’m naturally lazy 😂 pb is 27 mins. Normal 30-33 mins.

@Satterthwaite thanks for the suggestion, I used to be into kettlebell classes. Atm they don’t run it as both the instructors are on mat leave. I’ll be back to it when it’s on again. x

Then a sub hour 10k is definitely achievable for you!

Studentnursesos12e · 16/07/2019 18:15

@Nesssie

That’s my hope, thanks xx

Just went to body attack and hated it. I also dislike body combat. I do love body pump, Speedflex, spin and body-flex. At least I’ve knocked a few off 😂

I've recently completed the c25k programme, which I've loved. The only negative is that I can't see any difference to my body other than being fitter to run continuously.
Therefore I've joined an outdoor circuit/ boot camp type class and boy can I tell I've done it.
I'm hoping that these two combined will help me see changes to my overweight body.
Good luck with whatever you choose. We can do it 😊

Studentnursesos12e · 17/07/2019 20:59

@JPduck good luck to you too xx

I used to do 13 classes a week and running and have now had a broken fibula for over a year.

No specific injury or accident to the leg, the bone is a total mess. Consultant says it's an injury he sees in people who exercise too much and will take at least 2 years to heal. I thought because I was mixing up stuff like spinning, pump, combat, balance classes it would be ok.
