Best for toning bum?

I'm slim and eat a reasonably good diet, but since having my third child 18 months ago I am no longer toned. I was more toned during that pregnancy than I am now as I exercised every day, but now I can't seem to find the time or motivation!!

I look fine in clothes (size 8/10) but out of clothes my thighs and bum look really wobbly, caught sight of them in mirror this morning and was like nope I need to fix this ASAP lol. My bum used to be great (according to husband) he has not commented on it being wobbly at all and when I moan he says I'm being ridiculous, look great etc, but I know I do not!

What are the best exercises for bums and thighs that do not require too much time out of my day? I can't afford a gym membership and don't like running at all! I also don't have childcare as husband out 7-7 and no local family so needs to be something I can do at home really.

Side leg lifts maybe. My bum is a big wobble.

Squats and lunges Smile

Google glute activation and get some resistance bands (mine were £11 from Argos) - I have only just started but you can really feel the burn after a short time. They use similar in my gym for glute class.

@Dinosforall gosh some of those activities look like you need to be a gymnast for haha I'm not very flexible at all... I have resistance bands still from physio as my hips are buggered so maybe I could use those bands.

Squats I will have to start doing again!

Can anyone recommend exercise dvd/you tube clips for tips and motivation?

Squats and lunges.

Do them body weight only for a while and check your form. Loads of great advice on YouTube. I really like MegSquats. She’s an amazing power lifter but encourages any and women to “get under a bar” so there’s loads of advice for beginners.

When you can do 5 sets of 10 reps (10 each leg for lunges) then think of adding some weights. Hand weights are fine - improvise with ordinary household items!

But basically, squats and lunges.

ChocOrCheese · 22/06/2019 18:00

Squats and lunges, yes. Also:

Glute bridges
Walking (especially sideways) while wearing a resistance band
Bird dog
Side leg lifts
Plank (you should have glutes heavily engaged when planking)
Wall sits (for quads)

BeansandRice · 22/06/2019 18:06

Basically, anything that hurts.

JustMe9 · 22/06/2019 18:08

plank!

icecreamsundae32 · 22/06/2019 18:25

@ChocOrCheese had to look up bird dog lol! I am rubbish at planks, can do glute bridges and side crab squat walking thing but don't know what that's called!

Yes to residence band round thighs, bend knees and walk sideways.

Single leg lunges.
Hip thrusts. Elevate the feet on sofa, squeeze glutes and lift hips. Add a band and open knees at the top. Or add a weight.
Weighted bridges.
Plank but lift a leg if you can.
Pilates clam with band.

With squats many people just use quads not glutes. Press through your heels and squeeze glutes to activate.

Delatron · 22/06/2019 18:30

Resistance band!

Delatron · 22/06/2019 18:30

Oh if you’re rubbish at planks don’t do leg lifts in one!

Winsomelosesome · 22/06/2019 18:32

Weighted goblet squats and lunges, side lunges and glute bridges have worked wonders for my butt. You want to go really low on your squats otherwise you're mainly working your quads. Maybe start off with just bodyweight though as pp said. I just do 15-30 minute hiit workouts on YouTube, easy to squeeze in to your day.

squats and lunges but also for toning that area and strengthening legs - steep hills or exercises that work on that basis. I live in one of the highest hill points in London and when I used to walk up and down the hills (to the station!) my bum and legs were very toned.
