What compliments running

wonderstuff123 · 12/06/2019 16:37

I did the couch to 5km last year, then stopped running. Got back into it a few months ago and am now training for a 10km in a few weeks. Currently going out 3/ a week running about 8km,getting ready for the 10km. I want to do something else that compliments it though twice a week as although I'm loving running,I'm primarily doing it to get fit and lose weight (have to lose two stone to get to a healthy weight). I've tried stuff like zumba at my local gym but I find its too high impact and my legs ache so much after that I can't run the next day!

Anyone have any suggestions?

Weight training will be good for your muscles, to help them work more efficiently.

Yoga will help prevent injury and improve flexibility.

Sitting on the couch. That compliments running quite well I find!

Weight training - not too heavy but lots of reps. Esp things like squats and lunges which will activate your glutes.

I do CrossFit and yoga. I like the former because it's mixed- sport rather than sports-specific and also in a group, whereas I always run alone.

Off topic but

I spin and do bodyweight stuff. Mostly run though!

I do Pilates, a resistance band session and am flirting with a dance class.

Things that work on your core and lengthen all the muscle groups that running tends to shorten can be r ally helpful

Weight training is great and Kettlebells is very popular with my club, lots of people crediting it with improved times.

Weight training and yoga

TriSkiRun99 · 15/06/2019 19:26

I had to start doing weights to strengthen my body for longer runs once I went past 10k to train for HM. It definitely helped reduce injury. Plus I swim and do Pilates to cross train.

megletthesecond · 15/06/2019 19:27

Yoga. Stretching and strength.

BeansandRice · 20/06/2019 09:21

Weights. And you can go quite heavy once you get experienced. You'll build fitness - I notice that my running times are faster with mostly weights and HIIT - interval training.

Also - you really really must stretch - yoga or Pilates once a week, minimum.

Stumpedasatree · 21/06/2019 10:49

@BeansandRice and @TriSkiRun99 can you pls post specific weight routines? I'm interested :)

Taswama · 21/06/2019 10:54

Yoga definitely. Also cycling- still legs but much lower impact.
