Has anyone done the three peaks challenge and a 100km walk? How do they compare?

I've completed a 100km walk a couple of years ago which was tough! I'm signed up to do the three peaks challenge in a few weeks and was wondering how they compare. Has anyone done both? Anyone able to allay my fears that I've made a mistake in signing up to do this?!?Smile

I would think the three peaks would be a lot easier than a 100k walk, especially if the 100k was hilly.
Am sure you will be fine, good luck.

ClashCityRocker · 15/06/2019 18:50

Is it the Yorkshire three peaks or the national three peaks?

INeedNewShoes · 15/06/2019 18:54

I reckon that as long as you do plenty of proper challenging hillwalking in training you'll be absolutely fine given that you had the stamina to do the 100k.

It would be a mistake to think that walking on easy, flat paths would provide enough training as you need to build up confidence dealing with mountain walking and the elements.

THree peaks ( either) is easier than 100km. DO you do regular hardy exercise ? Good boots well broken in and competent

MIdgebabe · 15/06/2019 19:02

Compede

It's the national one.

I haven't done as much walking as I would have liked but have spent time in the gym and really focused on my legs. Lots of metafit, legs bums and tums classes, walking on a treadmill at maximum gradient and step machines

I wouldn’t do the three peaks, so many people, so bad for the environment!

INeedNewShoes · 16/06/2019 08:18

Can you expand on that Billy?

How is it bad for the environment? Should no one be walking up mountains?

I know that footfall degrades the paths but aside from that, what are the issues?

I think having added this negative twist to the thread it would be decent of you to explain what you mean.

PotsOfJoy · 16/06/2019 19:51

Think they mean all the crap that gets left behind and disturbance to locals. Both easy to avoid by not being a twat.

Oilyskinproblems · 16/06/2019 20:03

was the 100km walk hilly? I did a lot of mountain climbing in training for 3 peaks and we still only just managed to do it in the 24 hours. It was great fun at the start but it gets tough towards the end with sleep deprivation kicking in. I would imagine a 100km would be the same sort of mind over matter thinking though.

MonsieurBanana · 16/06/2019 20:06

It was London to Brighton so flat but with a killer hill at the end

I did a 100km walk with hills. It was very very hard BUT the training walk of 50km I did on the flat was way worse. Hills are good - different muscles, feet get pressure in different places. One of the people I walked with did the Three Peaks the next year and said it was not nearly as hard as the 100km - the biggest problem was stiffness at the start of peaks 2 and 3 after being in a car.

gigi556 · 16/06/2019 21:07

I haven't done the three peaks but I did 100km on the South Downs. I reckon 100km would be more difficult. Can you sleep in the car for 3 peaks? You have a lot of recovery time so even with lack of sleep, I reckon it'd be easier. With anything like this, a huge amount is down to mental state. If you've done 100km, you can totally do 3 peaks :)

Moominfan · 16/06/2019 21:12

I did three peaks last year, during summer it was brutal. As pp said it's very much mind over matter towards end.

Skyejuly · 16/06/2019 21:13

I much preferred 3 peaks!

MonsieurBanana · 16/06/2019 23:25

Thanks so much for your responses, you've all made me feel a bit more confident. Can't wait!

Thought I'd update this in case it can help anyone else in the future.

I did the three peaks this weekend. It was very tough! I think I found it more challenging than the 100k. Going up the mountains was just pure hard slog for which I had trained. I found going downhill absolutely brutal on my knees which I hadn't expected. So the whole thing was pretty painful but totally amazing.

I deliberately went with a company that didn't focus too much on the times but on getting everyone through it. Other walkers were getting turned back five minutes from the summit if they were too slow which I though was unfair after getting all that way!
Thanks everyone!

Wow! Well done OP!

Yes, my knees hate the descent as well. I'm much happier climbing up mountains than the inevitable coming down!

Glad you went with a nice company. That does sound awful people being turned back.
