Asthma and excercise

I don’t have asthma but I am interested to know if the condition stops you from exercising completely. I ask as a colleague has said they can’t partake in a particular event because they have asthma. Over the years I have taught many children with asthma and they have used inhalers when necessary. Also my friend’s son had very bad asthma to the point that he was hospitalised when little. However he was always active and still plays football. His condition improved over the years as he got older.

Asthma.affects people differently.and some people also have other chest conditions. It's up to your colleague really what they want to get involved in. Are you worried about your colleague.

My dd can be active, until she can’t. She also has to make smart choices. Physical activity outdoors when pollen counts are high are a recipe for disaster. Even with an inhaler in advance, it just isn’t worth it.

I'm asthmatic and there are certain highly aerobic things I can't do. Exercise that builds up slowly and relies on strength and stamina (something like cycling on the flat or swimming) is fine, running and sports where you don't get any recovery time cause asthma attacks.

Different things can be triggers for asthma. For me, certain types of food can make me wheezy and I can't do any exercise when it's very cold as this is by far my worst trigger. Even walking briskly sets me off on a cold day. Other than that I can exercise normally, including sprinting and jogging.

I'm asthmatic and I can run, so definitely different things for different people. In a different league entirely, Paula Radcliffe is asthmatic, and Bradley Wiggins famously so ...

I'm asthmatic and I can usually do all exercise. In fact exercise has improved my asthma and I don't get anywhere near as many attacks as I was prior to starting over 2 years ago. I'm fine in the gym, but I can't run outside when it's foggy as that is a trigger for me.

DS is only 6 but exercise does not appear to be a trigger for his asthma.

DS2 developed asthma after we moved to Australia. He is extremely active but running in cold and foggy air will trigger an asthma attack. He does athletics in (australian ) summer season from September to March , but running on the beach chasing his brother in May, might cause an attack in which he is so short of breath he has to sit down.

Other triggers are cold and damp/mouldy rooms,
