How much do you sweat?

Started working out recently and I have noticed I sweat a lot compared to others in the gym. I don’t mind it but I’m not sure if others find it disgusting. I literally drip in sweat, running off my head especially.

I’m not usually a sweaty person, in fact in usually a very cold person. It’s not hormonal either As I’m 28 so not near the menopause yet.

I notice I sweat more when doing cardio and hardly at all during weight lifting. Is this normal?

Is it a good thing to sweat so much? Does it mean I’m burning more or not?

Basically when you burn energy aerobically you generate heat. Some people generate heat more than others. Some people are "more insulated" so retain heat more. Some people are more "sweat adapted" (i.e. their body is better at inducing sweating to keep body temp down) These factors all impact how much you sweat.

I notice I sweat more when doing cardio and hardly at all during weight lifting. Is this normal? Yes- normal.

I'm like you. Im not generally a sweaty person but I do run warm (don't feel the cold) and it absolutely runs off me when I'm doing cardio (I run, but outside). In summer I can literally wring my running gear out after 15k.

HeyMicky · 29/05/2019 02:52

Buckets. And I go red 🤷🏼‍♀️

BlueGoats · 29/05/2019 03:32

It varies loads between people, and any regular gym-goer should know that and not find it disgusting. Cardio is usually sweatier than weights too.

Just give equipment a quick wipe when you've finished with it, drink plenty, and consider a separate bag for soggy kit!

Nottsangel2015 · 01/06/2019 14:39

I drip sweat too when I'm on the cardio machines at the gym! I love it though in a weird way makes me feel satisfied that I'm working out good Grin
I wouldn't worry about, ive week the slimmest and fittest of people do 10 mins on the stair master and be dripping with sweat.

Don't think about it and carry on. Guarantee no one is looking or bothered by it. I see a lot of the guys doing weights dripping with sweat too x

Silverstreaks · 02/06/2019 18:57

A huge amount compared to many people. But like Nottsangel I like it and it shows me I'm working hard.
To fully compliment the look I turn beetroot and have white ringed crazy looking eyes.
Once I break a sweat I feel so much better. That prickly/electric sensation just beforehand is awful.

I sweat LOADS!! I always sweat like mad in the gym. If I'm not sweating, I'm not working. And now I'm peri-menopausal which has made it worse. And I take Tamoxifen which makes it EVEN worse. I've learnt not to care anymore and just focus on my workout instead.

After a spin class I look like someone has tipped a bucket of water over my head. Yet some women look exactly the same as when they started, including the same hair and full face of make-up. Bizarre. Takes all sorts I guess.

I always carry a small Sheridan black flannel/towel with me when I'm training so I can mop the sweat off me. And I wear gym kit which doesn't show the sweat stains. Definitely no grey marl!!! That doesn't hide the sweat running down my face or neck but I train mainly with people who judge you on how hard you work rather than how pretty you look. Thank goodness!

I'm lucky in that at least I don't go red. But I'm also unlucky in that I go to a small gym and someone is almost always filming or taking photos for social media. It's like being surrounded by paparazzi. I write this as someone who hates having their photo taken. I've slowly adjusted to the fact that on average every week or so, a photo or video of me exercising will be on Instagram. Lifting weights, doing strongman work, on the treadmill, even just stretching.....nothing is sacred. And they do love a group photo straight after we've finished circuit training when everyone is at their sweatiest. Damn millenials! Wink

evilharpy · 02/06/2019 20:33

Running outside I don’t sweat much. During a spin class I sweat a lot more. Something like body pump or even bootcamp I barely sweat at all.

Blobby10 · 03/06/2019 14:14

I sweat so much during my gym sessions that I sometimes look like I've already had a shower!

Craftycorvid · 03/06/2019 14:22

I look red and sweaty. I carry a towel and water which helps - as does gym gear designed to ‘wick away’ sweat. Someone told me it’s a sign of increasing fitness if you sweat more, but I don’t know about that in my case!

RavenLG · 03/06/2019 14:56

I get sweats just walking. And absolutely BUCKETS directly from my head and neck. I'll look like I've been in a swimming pool after 5 minutes. It's disgusting, and embarrassing and it's the one thing I would change about me.

AnchorDownDeepBreath · 03/06/2019 15:00

As long as you're wiping the equipment down, I don't mind. I don't tend to sweat much and instead worry people think I'm putting no effort in; ha.

Drogosnextwife · 03/06/2019 15:04

Loads and my face goes bright red. One of the reasons I hated doing
P.E at school. I don't care now.

MrsTerryPratchett · 03/06/2019 15:29

I'm a red-faced sweater. I do wonder if people worry about me Grin

thenewaveragebear1983 · 03/06/2019 20:53

I sweat a fair bit running but the wind dries me off so it's not too noticeable. I can only really tell when I get indoors again and I then continue dripping for a while after and all my kit is wet underneath grim I don't sweat at circuits/weights, and I don't get red in the face thankfully. In fact, the photo of me literally crossing the finish line of a 21k race I look like I've barely even started but I was dying inside!

It's probably the only thing about my body that doesn't seem to conspire against me. However, I do find that I Wake in the night with my pj's soaked with sweat as I think I'm having some sort of ridiculously early menopause symptoms.

Rathkelter · 04/06/2019 23:17

Sweaty gymgoers don't bother me in the slightest, apart from when they don't wipe down equipment properly or they use their already ringing wet towel to do so, or when their clothes stink and by stink I mean the hum of a ten year-old t-shirt that's done way more than it should have in its humble little life.

ChocOrCheese · 05/06/2019 17:39

Depends what I am doing. Anything that gets my heart rate really high will induce a very vivid red face and lots of sweat, especially down my neck and back.

Weights rarely push my heart rate up high for long enough to have this effect so I sweat less - though still enough to leave damp patches on the equipment (which I do wipe down, I hasten to add).

CrumpetWithMarg · 18/06/2019 15:39

I sweat, I was worried too but have a lovely PT who tells me not to..!

When I do one of the cardio classes it quite often drips off my nose onto the mat during the plank at the end.. Ew!

I have bought some lovely gym leggings that I just don't wear, because they are light coloured and I get an all-over sweat on, and am super worried about it showing, so I stick with black!

BeansandRice · 22/06/2019 08:44

I swear a lot. I love it - it feels like it oils my joints ...

My PT has a T-shirt which says “Sweat is fat crying”

BeansandRice · 22/06/2019 08:47

And at menopause and for a couple of years afterwards, I actually stopped sweating as much. Which is great, as I used to get sweaty underarms all the time in normal life. And it showed. And it doesn’t any more.

Post-menopause is wonderful in so many ways.
