Pointers for someone new to jogging!

Hey all, I am currently trying to lose weight as I have crept up to a BMI of 35 since having my little boy (now toddler).

I have never been athletic, but after many failed attempts at losing weight I want to attack from all sides. So, I’ve joined slimming world and a Pilates class and want to start jogging.

The thought has always terrorfied me (particularly subjecting others to my hideous bouncing belly 😂) but I figure the cost is worth the gain.

Anyway, yesterday I bought some running shoes and comfy clothes and this morning I built up the nerve to give it a go. Gentle to begin with then alternating periods of jogging/power walking. I know you have to build up gradually so I didn’t push too far. Total distance was 2km and a fair amount would have been walking, but I was knackered! And now I have a horrible soreness in my left knee... so my question to you is - do you have any tips or advice which might make it easier for me? Maybe good warm ups or things to look out for?

Thank you!

I e just started running at aged 40, I thought I oxukd never ba bake to run but I can!...I'm using the Couch to 5k app......it's a 9 week plan and starts off slowly e.g. 5 min warm up followed by 1 min run,2 min walk, then 1 min run etc....do 3 runs a week and each run will slowly increase the running sections. The app prompts you when to run/ walk..... I'm on week 5 run 2 and ran for 8 mins continuously then 5 min walk then another 8 minutes.....doesn't sound much bût a great achievement for me from never running at all.
Good luck x

Sorry for typos, should say ...I've just started running I thought I would never be able to run but I can.

Yes to Couch to 5K! It’s also worth joining one of the C25K threads on here, they’re great for support & tips.

Insomniac79 · 26/05/2019 16:32

I'd also recommend couch to 5k - really good gradual plan which starts very gently

BiscuitsMcgee · 26/05/2019 16:34

That sounds familiar actually- might have to give it a go, thank you 😊

As for the typos... it was fun trying to translate haha

And take knee pain as a warning to ease up! I didn’t & I had to stop running for 2 months.

Like the other posters have said, Couch to 5K will ease you in very gradually, & you can always repeat weeks.

PiggyPlumPie · 26/05/2019 16:53

Yes to couch to 5k but also slow down! Your running pace can be a tiny bit faster than your walking pace as long as you have a running action.

Speed will come

Yes, another C25k recommendation here. It is designed to help you not do too much too soon.

Best of luck, running typically gets addictive, you’ll be seeking out 5k to 10k plans in no time Smile

BiscuitsMcgee · 26/05/2019 21:59

Thank you all! I really appreciate your responses 😊 I have downloaded the cough to 5k app and will give it a go!

If you want a bit more adventure, try also the Zombies! Run! app.

But you can't outrun a poor diet, so eating less is going to be the main thing.

However running, plus Pilates class, will tone up the emerging you brilliantly. I think your approach is a very good one.

BiscuitsMcgee · 27/05/2019 07:12

Haha I’m so going to have to have a look at that one AuntieStella !

And thank you 😊 so far the slimming world diet seems to be going well also... and for once I don’t feel starving! Whoop!

Well done on the running! Is there a Parkrun near you? They are a great way to improve your running. Even if you start by volunteering, you’ll meet lots of like minded people and gets a lots of advice and support.
