On holiday - finding good running routes

What tips do you have to find good running routes when you're away please?

I use Strava but don't have premium and sometimes use the route finder in Map My Run but last time I tried that it didn't load and I got very lost!

Hi OP

We're just giving this one a bump for you - let us know if you'd like us to move it to somewhere with a bit more traffic!

I use an os map to look at footpaths.

I use Google sattelite to check of there are pavements and Endomondo route planner to get a rough estimate of distance.

MapMyRun

You can either google it, or get the app (same backer as MFP) and there will be loads there to give you ideas.

Or you could find where he nearest Parkrun is held, and run that.

Unless you really are in the back of beyond, in which case old fashioned map is probably the best bet.

Google maps to find nearby parks, reserves, waterfronts

OP, I find this tricky too, unless I know the area or am near a big park or bridleway or something obvious. I like running on softer surfaces and most of the routes on websites are for pavements. I've used OS maps for footpaths, and then forget the route, or they are too boggy, or loads of stiles. I try to notice when out walking what might make a good run as I hate feeling I've "wasted" the run.

Depending on where you're going, you could try posting on a Facebook group like RunMummyRun or look for a running group where you are going. People quite often post asking for suggestions of routes.

I'd recommend taking a pair of good all terrain, waterproof shoes... e.g. goretex salomon trail runners or similar... so you can run on beach or bog or trail and pavement or whatever you find.

Thanks all - I found a great route via MapMyRun and google satellite so great tips.

Take a months subscription @ £3.99 of OS Maps and either look for other users routes to follow or make your own and follow your own phones GPS

Strava have a route mapper on the PC version rather than the app. If you save the route, it appears on the app and you can follow it.
